The Mercedes G-Class EV has finally been given a proper name. Contrary to reports suggesting the luxury off-roader would be the first model to drop the EQ branding, the two letters have been retained in its nomenclature. However, instead of being called the EQG like the concept, the production version will be known as the “G580 with EQ Technology” when it debuts at the upcoming 2024 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition.
The “G580” designation suggests the electric SUV could be more powerful than the G550. The regular G-Class has dropped its V8 engine for an inline-six with mild-hybrid assistance, good for 443 horsepower, for the 2025 model year. We doubt the electric G-Class will outgun the AMG G63, which rocks a mighty 577-hp V8.
The electric G-Class is expected to feature four electric motors, one per wheel, and a battery pack estimated to be around 100 kWh. That should give it a maximum driving range of around 200 miles (322 km) on a single charge. A variant with a high-energy-density battery pack is reportedly planned for 2025. We also know the electric G will have an approach angle of 32 degrees, a departure angle of 35 degrees, and 9.8 inches (249 mm) of ground clearance.
Full details on the Mercedes-Benz G-Class EV will be revealed when it makes its public debut at the 2024 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition, which kicks off on April 25.
