Designing and building a new car is tough even for well-established automakers, an easy way around it is to form a partnership where each one brings to the table what the other needs. Nissan has teamed up with Honda and now it has partnered with Mitsubishi.
Nissan is making up for lost time with its first-ever plug-in hybrid in the US. The vehicle will use a system engineered by Mitsubishi’s engineers. On the other hand, Mitsubishi plans to launch its first-ever electric car in the US using technology borrowed from Nissan. That’s just the tip of the ambitious iceberg.
The two are co-developing an electric pickup truck for the US market. The vehicle will be manufactured in Mexico and will include both a fully electric and a plug-in hybrid variant. The new truck is said to be scheduled to come out sometime between 2027 and 2031.
While there is no word on the name of the new model, it could easily be an electrified version of the Nissan Frontier. The Frontier was completely redesigned for the 2022 model year, but it only has one powertrain option. That is a 310-hp V6, but the singular engine choice has limited the Frontier’s appeal. An electrified option would be a welcome change.
Nissan previously announced a new plan dubbed The Arc, which includes launching 30 new models within the next three years. Essentially, it is overhauling its entire lineup around the world with new vehicles and revised powertrains. This new partnership with Mitsubishi should help make that plan a successful reality.
