Making its debut at the ongoing Beijing Auto Show 2024 in China, Chery has officially unveiled the new Jaecoo J7 PHEV, which will be one of the models sold in Vietnam this year under Chery’s Jaecoo brand.
The highlight of the Jaecoo J7 PHEV is undoubtedly its powertrain. The vehicle features a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) system, consisting of a 1.5L turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine paired with an electric motor on the front axle and a Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT).
This PHEV powertrain produces a combined output of 347 horsepower and 525 Nm of torque. When both the gasoline engine and the battery are used, the vehicle can cover a distance of up to 1,200 km. If running solely on battery power, the Jaecoo J7 PHEV has a range of 88 km. This enables it to achieve a fuel consumption of 4.9 liters per 100 km.

Unlike most PHEVs on the market, the Jaecoo J7 PHEV supports DC fast charging. However, Chery has not yet disclosed the battery capacity or the fast-charging time for this model. Additionally, the Jaecoo J7 PHEV comes with a V2L capability, allowing it to serve as a “power bank” to supply electricity to external devices.
Apart from its powertrain, the Jaecoo J7 PHEV shares many similarities with the regular J7. It has the same 4,538 mm length and 2,672 mm wheelbase. These dimensions position it within the B+ SUV segment in Vietnam, where it will compete with the Toyota Corolla Cross and the upcoming Haval Jolion.

Exterior-wise, the Jaecoo J7 PHEV adopts a relatively curvaceous and fluid design, reminiscent of the Range Rover luxury SUV. It sports a large radiator grille with vertical slats in a cascading style, which is connected to the LED daytime running strip, while the dual-projector headlights are positioned vertically below.

Other notable exterior features include 19-inch alloy wheels with aerodynamic designs similar to electric vehicles, concealed door handles, a wraparound taillight cluster, and two vertical lights on the rear bumper. The charging port is located on the right rear fender, while the exhaust pipes are hidden, giving the vehicle a clean and sleek appearance. These elements contribute to a low drag coefficient of 0.318 Cd.

Inside the cabin, the Jaecoo J7 PHEV offers a two-row, five-seater layout. The seats are upholstered in leather, and the steering wheel has a sporty flat-bottom design. Behind the steering wheel is a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, while the 14.8-inch central touchscreen is positioned vertically. This screen supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto wirelessly, and software updates can be performed via WiFi.

Additionally, the Jaecoo J7 PHEV comes with two wireless charging pads that offer 50W fast charging, two cup holders, and several silver-colored buttons on the center console. Automatic climate control, rear air vents, a head-up display, ambient lighting, heated/ventilated front seats, and a panoramic sunroof are also featured on this B+ SUV.
It is likely that the Jaecoo J7 PHEV will share similar safety features with the regular J7. If so, it could come with six to ten airbags (depending on the variant), a 360-degree camera with a 540-degree surround-view, front and rear parking sensors, and over 20 advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS).

The pricing of the Jaecoo J7 PHEV in Vietnam has yet to be revealed. However, considering its PHEV powertrain, it is unlikely to come cheap.
In addition to the Jaecoo J7 PHEV, Chery plans to introduce three more models in Vietnam this year: the Omoda C5, Omoda E5, and Jaecoo J7. The Omoda C5 and E5 duo will make their Vietnamese debut in the third quarter of this year. Subsequently, the Jaecoo 7 and 7 PHEV will be introduced to domestic customers in the fourth quarter of 2024.
Earlier in April 2024, the Omoda & Jaecoo brand signed a joint venture and cooperation agreement with the Geleximco Group to establish an automobile manufacturing plant. According to the announcement made during the signing ceremony, Omoda & Jaecoo’s plant will be located in Thai Binh province and will specialize in producing new energy vehicles (NEVs).
The annual production capacity of Omoda & Jaecoo’s plant in Vietnam is expected to be around 200,000 vehicles.
