According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), over 427,000 Telluride SUVs are affected by this recall due to a manufacturing error in the assembly of the drive shafts. Improper alignment of the intermediate and drive shafts during installation can cause them to not engage properly. Over time, both components can become damaged, causing the SUV to potentially roll away even when parked.
From 2022 to the present, the manufacturer has recorded 16 cases of vehicles still moving when stopped or emitting noise. Several Tellurides even failed to engage reverse/drive mode. Of the 16 reported cases, six resulted in complete failure of the intermediate shaft, prompting the manufacturer to issue a recall of 427,000 vehicles on the market for inspection.

However, Kia has confirmed that there have been no accidents related to this issue so far. The manufacturer will notify vehicle owners about the recall starting May 15. All affected vehicles will receive a free update to their electronic parking brake software.
The Kia Telluride is a large SUV popular among American drivers for its off-road capabilities and sporty design. It’s equipped with a 3.8L V6 engine, producing 291 horsepower and 355 Nm of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive as standard, with all-wheel drive available as an option. In the US market, the Telluride competes directly with the Ford Explorer, Toyota Prado, and Volkswagen.
