The man was found to be in possession of a high-end sports utility vehicle (SUV) when officials from the Maran Social Welfare Department in Pahang, Malaysia, conducted a raid to eradicate begging at the Sri Jaya Night Market on February 21, according to The Straits Times.
The authorities spotted a man dressed in a gray robe begging for money at the night market. “He held a paper bag, soliciting the sympathy of passersby. Both of the man’s palms were small, unlike those of a normal person,” the department said in a Facebook post.
The police interrogated the man, but he remained silent, leading them to believe that he might be deaf and mute.
However, the police persisted in their questioning and asked him to produce his identification documents. To their surprise, the man claimed that he had left his documents in his car.
They were even more astonished to learn that it was a luxury Proton X70 SUV, which retails for over $30,000.
The unnamed man told welfare officers that he could make up to $100 in just 4-5 hours of begging at the night market.
He resided in Kelantan state and had been receiving a monthly allowance of $95 from the welfare fund for the disabled since 2001.
After uncovering the man’s deceit, the welfare officials chose not to press charges but instead issued a warning since it was his “first offense” in the Maran district.
