This issue has prompted a recall, as a stall while the car is in motion could lead to dangerous situations. The cause: Various factors, which remain under investigation, can cause the engine to shut off unexpectedly. This is not an isolated incident, and the recall affects a significant number of vehicles. According to the Vietnam Registry, thousands of Mercedes-Benz vehicles in the country are set to be recalled to address and rectify various issues, which could cause the cars to shut down or lose power, and even pose a fire risk during operation.

Specifically, a total of 1,776 units of the GLC 200, GLC 300 4MATIC (X254 type), C200 (W206 type), and C43 AMG (W206 type) models, manufactured and assembled by Mercedes-Benz Vietnam (MBV) between March and September 2023, need to be recalled to inspect and replace the fuse box.

The 80A fuse box inside these vehicles may not meet requirements, leading to possible electrical short circuits or increased electrical resistance within the fuse box, causing the fuse box’s electrical connection system to malfunction.

As a consequence, the affected vehicles may experience a loss of traction (engine shutdown) without prior warning, while collision-assistance functions or the multi-functional instrument cluster may also be impacted. This increases the risk of collisions or injuries to passengers in the event of a crash. Moreover, the possibility of a fire cannot be ruled out.

Additionally, Mercedes-Benz will have to recall 1,986 imported vehicles of the GLS 450 4MATIC, GLE 450 4MATIC, and Maybach GLS 480 4MATIC (X167 type) models, manufactured between June 2019 and July 2023, to inspect and update the software for the transmission control unit.

On these nearly 2,000 vehicles, if the shift from 6th to 7th gear inside the transmission does not occur accurately during light braking, combined with other specific conditions (e.g., low transmission oil temperature), the engine may shut down. As a result, the affected vehicles will lose traction until the vehicle is braked to a stop and the engine is restarted.

Furthermore, the group of Mercedes-Benz vehicles in Vietnam that require recall includes 551 units of the AMG GLE 53 4MATIC, GLE 450 4MATIC, GLS 450 4MATIC, Maybach GLS 600 4MATIC (167 type), S450 4MATIC (223 type), and AMG G63 (463 type) models, produced between June 2021 and December 2022.

On these imported vehicles, the fuel pump may not meet specifications, leading to reduced fuel pump function under certain conditions, and the fuel pump may cease to operate. In this case, the affected vehicles could automatically lose power, resulting in collision or accident risks while driving.

The recall notice states that the entire process of inspecting, replacing, or updating the software for the affected Mercedes-Benz vehicles will be carried out by MBV free of charge. The estimated time for this process is between one and two hours, depending on the issue at hand.
