On July 10, 2024, the Quang Binh Provincial Council for the Destruction of Administrative Violation Exhibits made the decision to destroy two smuggled cars: a Lamborghini Murcielago LP640-4 and a Mercedes-Benz G-Class. This news quickly attracted the attention of the media and car enthusiasts alike.
In particular, images of the destroyed Lamborghini Murcielago LP640-4 evoked a sense of sadness among many.
The photos show the Lamborghini Murcielago LP640-4 with its interior, trunk lid, and engine compartment removed, and its windows smashed, prior to its complete destruction. However, compared to some other countries’ methods of destroying smuggled vehicles, which include the use of crushers or steamrollers, this destruction seemed relatively mild.
According to our research, the Lamborghini Murcielago LP640-4 is a rare supercar, with an overseas selling price ranging from 3 to 6 billion VND. In Vietnam, only four of these cars have been imported: three coupe variants in black, green, and yellow, and one Lamborghini Murcielago LP640-4 Roadster, a convertible model.
Back in 2020, authorities stopped a truck with license plate number 29H-115.23, driven by Truong Thanh Binh (52 years old, residing in Van Quan, Ha Dong, Hanoi), for inspection while it was traveling on the Ho Chi Minh Road in Bo Trach district, Quang Binh province.
Upon inspection, the officers discovered two cars resembling a Lamborghini Murcielago and a Mercedes-Benz G-Class. The Lamborghini-like car was green and bore the license plate number 29U – 3817, while the Mercedes-like car was yellow and had the license plate number 29A – 519.76.
The truck driver was unable to present any documents proving the origin of the two cars, and Vietnam’s vehicle registration system had no data on their license plates, chassis, or engine numbers.
The Lamborghini Murcielago is a high-performance sports car produced by the renowned Italian automobile manufacturer, Lamborghini, from 2001 to 2010. Succeeding the Diablo and featuring a powerful V12 engine, the Murcielago was initially introduced as a coupe in 2001 and later made its way to North America for the 2002 model year.
As Lamborghini’s first new design in 11 years and the first model introduced under the ownership of its German parent company, Audi, and Volkswagen, the Murcielago was designed by Luc Donckerwolke, a Belgian-Peruvian who headed Lamborghini’s design department from 1998 to 2005.
A roadster variant was introduced in 2003, followed by the more powerful and updated LP 640 coupe and roadster versions, as well as the limited-edition LP 650–4 Roadster. The final Murcielago variant, the LP 670–4 SuperVeloce (SV), was produced in a limited run of 186 units globally, with one making its way to Vietnam.
Production of the Murcielago ended on November 5, 2010, with a total of 4,099 units manufactured. Its successor, the Aventador, was unveiled at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show and has also recently been discontinued to make way for the Revuelto.
