In a recent development, the US government agencies announced that automotive manufacturer General Motors (GM) will be paying a fine of $145.8 million (3.705 thousand billion VND) for selling 5.9 million vehicles that did not comply with emission regulations.
In addition to the monetary fine, GM has also voluntarily forfeited approximately 50 million tons of carbon dioxide credits that they had purchased around a decade ago for a price of over $100 million (2.54 thousand billion VND).Â
Despite the fine, GM has not admitted to any wrongdoing and maintains that all their vehicles comply with emission regulations and fuel economy certification.Â
The affected GM models are equipped with 2.4-liter, 5.3-liter, 6.2-liter, and 4.3-liter engines. Notably, the EPA has not mentioned any recall of the aforementioned vehicles that exceed emission limits. This includes 4.6 million pickup trucks and large SUVs, along with approximately 1.3 million mid-size SUVs, all from the 2012 – 2018 model years.
Interestingly, this is not the first time GM has been fined for such violations. Previously, in June 2023, GM paid a fine of $128.2 million (3.25 thousand billion VND) for failing to meet fuel economy performance requirements in 2016 and 2017.
