The all-new GAC Aion V: An Electric SUV with Smart Driving Technology

GAC Aion has unveiled the second generation of its all-electric SUV, the Aion V, in the Chinese market. With a starting price range of 129,800 – 189,800 CNY (approximately 17,800 – 26,000 USD), the new Aion V is more affordable than its predecessor, offering great value for money. Within just 80 minutes of its launch, the Aion V received an impressive 10,000 orders.

The GAC Aion V second generation is built on the company’s AEP electric vehicle platform and is positioned as an SUV with “core smart driving technology.” It has a sleek design with dimensions of 4,605 x 1,854 x 1,876 /1,660 (1,686) mm and a wheelbase of 2,775 mm. Compared to its predecessor, the Aion V Plus, the new model is slightly smaller, yet still spacious.

The exterior design of the new Aion V is inspired by the Tyrannosaurus Rex, featuring a bold and aggressive look. The rectangular headlights with the “H” design resemble the claws of a dinosaur, while the unique alloy wheels with floral-shaped spokes add a touch of elegance. The vehicle is fitted with Maxxis Victra Sport 5 series tires, sized 225/45 R19, for a smooth and stable ride.

The high-end 650 Lidar version takes it a step further with the addition of a lidar on the roof, along with five millimeter-wave radars, 11 cameras, and 12 ultrasonic radars to support the ADiGO Pilot intelligent driving assistance system, powered by the NVIDIA Orin-X chip.

Step inside the GAC Aion V, and you’ll find a spacious cabin with a standard five-seat layout. The interior design is similar to the previous generation, but with a more streamlined approach, reducing the number of physical buttons. The SUV features a 14.6-inch central control screen and an LCD instrument panel (size undisclosed) for a modern and tech-savvy driving experience.

Attention to detail is evident in the metal door handles and air conditioning vents, adding a touch of luxury to the interior. The Aion V also offers two wireless charging pads for smartphones and ambient lighting around the central control panel. Below the panel is a 6.6L storage compartment capable of cooling and heating, with a minimum temperature of -15°C and a maximum heating temperature of 50°C. To top it off, the SUV is equipped with a premium Belgian sound system, including an 8-inch subwoofer for an immersive audio experience.

Performance-wise, the GAC Aion V is offered with two types of electric motors: a high-power and a low-power version, depending on the trim level. The low-power motor produces 202 hp and 240 Nm of torque, while the high-power motor generates 221 hp and 240 Nm of torque. The SUV can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.9 seconds, making it both quick and efficient.

All variants of the GAC Aion V are equipped with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, available in various capacities, including 62.268 kWh, 62.27 kWh, 62.681 kWh, 74.976 kWh, 75.26 kWh, and 90.215 kWh. These batteries provide an impressive range of up to 520 km, 650 km, and even 750 km (based on CLTC standards). Additionally, the vehicle’s 400V silicon carbide platform and 3C fast-charging technology enable a range of 370 km with just a 15-minute charge.
