At the recent Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) 2024, Toyota officially unveiled the Innova Zenix Hybrid, a flexible-fuel vehicle that runs on biofuel.
Mr. Agus Tjahajana Wirakusumah, an expert from the Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), shared his impression of the new Toyota Innova Zenix Hybrid, stating that it offers a pleasant driving experience with acceleration comparable to that of electric vehicles and even outperforming conventional internal combustion engine cars.
Aside from its ability to run on biofuel (flexy fuel), this Toyota Innova Hybrid is identical to the standard model.
While biofuel helps reduce carbon emissions, its supply in Indonesia is currently limited. Pure bioethanol (E85 or E100) is not yet widely available, and Pertamina, the state-owned energy company, only offers Pertamax Green 95, a blend of RON 92 gasoline and 5% ethanol (E5), which is said to have lower emissions than regular gasoline.
Mr. Agus Tjahajana Wirakusumah highlighted the environmental benefits of bioethanol, which has a significantly lower sulfur content (50ppm) compared to gasoline (500 ppm). High sulfur levels are known to negatively impact air quality and human health.
Mr. M. Firdaus Manti, Assistant Deputy Minister for Maritime and Investment Coordination of Indonesia, echoed the potential of biofuels in the future. He suggested that automotive manufacturers could develop hybrid vehicles that utilize biofuels, which would be more environmentally friendly than hybrids relying on fossil fuels.
