VinFast Breaks Ground on New Indonesia Factory, Electrifying the Country’s Emerging EV Market

“VinFast Demonstrates Strong Commitment”

On July 15, VinFast officially inaugurated its assembly plant in Subang, West Java, Indonesia. According to the local media, this milestone holds significance for both VinFast and Indonesia.

In a post-event article, CNN Indonesia highlighted VinFast’s robust commitment to expanding its presence in Southeast Asia, particularly in Indonesia, which is poised to become a leading EV market.

“Vietnamese automobile manufacturer, VinFast, has demonstrated a strong commitment to expanding its reach in Southeast Asia, especially in Indonesia, predicted to be one of the most promising EV markets,” CNN Indonesia stated in its opening paragraph. The new plant in Subang stands as a testament to this commitment, reinforcing VinFast’s presence in the region.

Indonesian Media Pins High Hopes on VinFast

Although not physically present at the ceremony, Indonesian President Joko Widodo closely followed the event and expressed his full support for VinFast’s investment.

“I wholeheartedly support VinFast’s investment plans in Indonesia. As this is a rapidly growing industry, VinFast’s presence in Indonesia will contribute to the development of the country’s EV ecosystem,” Bisnis quoted President Joko Widodo’s official social media account.

At the groundbreaking ceremony, VinFast announced an initial investment of approximately $200 million for the assembly plant project. The factory is expected to have an annual production capacity of 50,000 electric vehicles. It will feature key production areas, including a body shop, assembly shop, paint shop, and testing area.

Vietnamese EV Brand Impresses Indonesian Media

The plant is scheduled to commence operations in the fourth quarter of 2025, focusing on the right-hand drive versions of the VF 3, VF 5, VF 6, and VF 7 models, tailored to the Indonesian market.

Speaking to the press at the event, Indonesia’s Presidential Chief of Staff, General Moeldoko, remarked that VinFast’s presence in Subang would positively impact the regional economy and create new employment opportunities, enhancing the lives of the surrounding community.

“I believe VinFast’s presence will bring much-needed technological innovation and knowledge transfer to enhance the competitiveness of the national automotive industry,” Kompas quoted Mr. Moeldoko.

He further expressed his hope that VinFast would propel Indonesia to become the focal point of production in Southeast Asia, especially for right-hand drive vehicles, thereby establishing the country as a crucial partner in the EV industry.

Laying the Foundation for Regional EV Development

Detik, one of Indonesia’s leading newspapers, delved into the reasons behind VinFast’s choice of Subang as the location for its new plant, while other manufacturers have favored Cikarang and Karawang, also in West Java, and home to numerous industrial zones.

“Subang is a very strategic area, not too far from the airport and close to the seaport. There’s also a highway that provides quicker access to Cirebon… That’s why many automotive companies are flocking to Subang,” Detik quoted General Moeldoko.

VinFast Indonesia’s CEO, Mr. Temmy Wiradjaja, attributed the decision to Subang’s continuously improving infrastructure and the dense concentration of component manufacturers, presenting opportunities for collaboration and mutual growth.

Amid the fierce competition in the EV market, Mr. Temmy remained optimistic. As quoted by Sindo News, he asserted, “We are determined to expand our operations in Southeast Asia and lay the foundation for the development of electric mobility in this region.”

In their post-event articles, several Indonesian newspapers expressed their anticipation of VinFast’s contribution to technological advancements in the automotive field, leaving a lasting impact on Indonesia’s EV market and the broader Southeast Asian region.
