Following the release of images of the L07 model, Deepal, a subsidiary of Changan, one of the four giants in China’s automotive industry, has now officially unveiled the interior of its S05 model. Deepal is well-known in Vietnam for its popular line of trucks.
Positioned in the crossover segment, the S05 will enter the market as a “budget-friendly” offering from the brand, with both BEV and EREV powertrain variants. With the S05, Deepal aims to boost its ambitious sales targets, as it currently falls short of its annual goal of 280,000 units.
Official images of the S05’s interior reveal a cabin featuring a brown and black color scheme, consistent with the overall design language of Deepal-branded vehicles. The center console boasts a large floating screen, while the center tunnel houses two wireless phone charging pads and a pair of cup holders.
The Deepal S05 features a D-shaped steering wheel with a three-spoke design, and the gear selector is conveniently located behind the wheel. Another unique feature of the S05 is the absence of a traditional instrument cluster, opting instead for a heads-up display projected onto the windshield.
The S05’s doors feature sleek push-button handles, and the second-row seating offers rear vents, dual USB ports, and a center headrest. Overall, the Deepal S05 presents an intriguing package.
As a compact NEV crossover, the Deepal S05 has dimensions of 4,620 mm in length, 1,900 mm in width, and 1,600 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,880 mm. Its front end sports slim headlights, a trapezoidal air intake, hidden door handles, and single-unit taillights. The SUV is fitted with either 18-inch or 20-inch wheels.
Under the hood, the Deepal S05 is powered by a 175 kW (238 hp) electric motor, drawing energy from a 56.12 kWh LFP battery pack, offering an impressive range of 510 km. Its kerb weight stands at 1,720 kg. The EREV variant features a 160 kW (218 hp) electric motor paired with 17.08 and 27.28 kWh LFP batteries.
This setup delivers a range of 100–150 km. The S05 also features a naturally aspirated ICE engine producing 72 kW (98 hp) under the hood. The kerb weight of this variant is 1,497 kg. The Deepal S05 is set to launch in the market later this year, positioning itself as an affordable SUV option within the brand’s lineup.
With a significant gap between their current sales and their annual target of 280,000 units, Deepal is eager to introduce the S05 to the market. In the first half of 2024, Deepal sold only 83,858 vehicles, falling short of their ambitious goals. However, the launch of the S05 could provide a much-needed boost to their sales figures.
Deepal, a newcomer to the automotive scene, was established in 2022 as a subsidiary of Changan, focusing on new energy vehicles. Their current lineup includes three models: the L07 sedan, S07 crossover, and G318 SUV. In 2023, Deepal announced its global strategy, signaling its intention to expand internationally.
Earlier this year, Deepal introduced two models, the L07 and S07, in Thailand. For 2024, the brand has set its sights on global sales of 450,000 units, with a particular focus on the Chinese market, targeting 280,000 units in domestic sales. However, their domestic sales performance in the first half of 2024 fell short, reaching only 83,858 units.
