In the coming months, the government will continue to implement a series of policies to support and encourage the use of green transportation, such as electric vehicles.

Following a meeting on the development of green transportation and charging station policies, the Government Office has issued a notice of Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha’s conclusions.

Notice No. 372/TB-VPCP states that the core task in achieving the green growth goals that Vietnam has committed to at international conferences is the transition to green energy.

At COP26, Vietnam made commitments to a green transition, including a pledge to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.

Electric vehicles

To work towards this goal, the Ministries of Transport, Construction, Planning and Investment, Finance, and Industry and Trade, along with provincial People’s Committees, have been implementing their assigned tasks, initially contributing positively to the transition of road vehicles to using green energy.

However, the implementation across ministries, sectors, and localities has lacked focus and prioritization, resulting in a lack of noticeable outcomes.

Therefore, the Deputy Prime Minister requested that the Ministry of Industry and Trade promptly submit to the Prime Minister amendments to Decision No. 28/2014/QD-TTg on the regulation of retail electricity prices. This includes studying, proposing, and assessing the impact of electricity price support mechanisms for charging stations serving green transportation.

The Ministry of Construction is also tasked with issuing and amending apartment building and commercial center standards, including regulations on charging systems for green transportation. This is to be completed by December 31, 2024.

To ensure the operation of existing green vehicles, the Ministry of Construction, in coordination with relevant ministries, agencies, and local authorities, is requested to issue guidance on incorporating public charging stations into urban, construction, and provincial planning. This will ensure the availability of charging stations for green transportation without disrupting the use of such vehicles by the public. The deadline for this task is August 2024.

The Ministry of Science and Technology is also urged to promptly establish standards for electrical plugs, sockets, and charging cables for green transportation by August 2024.
