The MG5 sedan, in its second generation, has received a mid-life update in the Chinese market. Exterior improvements primarily focus on the front and rear, drawing inspiration from the premium MG7 sedan.
The MG brand has unveiled an updated version of the MG5 sedan in China, five years after the second generation debuted at the 2020 Beijing Auto Show. This update sees the MG5 with a refreshed exterior design, inspired by the more premium MG7, along with numerous interior upgrades.
The updated MG5 retains the muscular styling of its predecessor but features redesigned front and rear ends.
Specifically, the front grille has been widened, and the surrounding black trim has been removed. Sharp, triangular headlights are equipped with dual LED strips on the inside, accompanied by side air intakes in the front bumper for a sportier look. At the rear, the taillights have been elongated, and the rear diffuser has been color-coded to match the body color.
The MG5 facelift has grown by 40mm in length compared to its predecessor, now stretching to 4,715mm. Other dimensions remain unchanged, including the 2,680mm wheelbase.
The interior of the updated MG5 has also undergone a significant redesign, now featuring a symmetrical layout. Notable changes include chrome-trimmed air vents; a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a matching 12.3-inch central touchscreen with a revised interface; and a streamlined center console with fewer physical buttons.
In terms of powertrain, the standard model continues to use a 1.5L naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine producing 129 horsepower, paired with either a 5-speed manual or a CVT transmission. The higher-spec model employs a turbocharged engine generating 181 horsepower and 285 Nm of torque, along with a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox.
The updated MG5 is equipped with a 540-degree surround-view camera system, and MG claims that the chassis has a torsional rigidity of up to 25,866 Nm/degree.
Local media reports that the MG5 accounted for half of MG’s sales in China in the first half of 2024, making it a core model for the brand. However, rivals such as the Changan Eado and Geely Emgrand continue to outsell it by a significant margin.
