The all-new MG3 is set to enter the Southeast Asian market, with Thailand as its first destination. This model is positioned in the B-segment hatchback category, competing directly with the Mazda2.
Recently, MG Thailand has announced the reservation of MG3 from August 20. The company stated that this small hatchback will be available in two hybrid versions, Hybrid D and Hybrid X, with a starting price of 500,000 baht, equivalent to approximately VND 360 million.
The 2024 MG3 has dimensions of 4,113 mm in length, 1,797 mm in height, and 1,502 mm in width. Its wheelbase is 2,570 mm, and it has a ground clearance of 117 mm. The luggage compartment offers a standard capacity of 293 liters, expandable to 1,037 liters when the rear seats are folded down. Compared to the previous generation, the new MG3 has significantly larger dimensions.
The MG3 boasts a youthful and sporty design, inspired by its older siblings, the MG5 and MG7, in the Chinese market. Notable exterior features include LED headlights with auto-leveling, LED taillights, LED brake lights, rear fog lights, power-adjustable and folding side mirrors, automatic rain-sensing wipers, a rear wiper, and 16-inch alloy wheels.
The interior stands out with a 7-inch digital instrument cluster and a standard 10.25-inch central touchscreen infotainment system, supporting Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity. The multifunction steering wheel and rotary gear selector add convenience. The seats are upholstered in leather with contrast stitching and diamond pattern accents, and the front seats are electrically adjustable in multiple directions. Additionally, the cabin features an air filtration system, rear air conditioning vents, a smart key, and two USB-A and one USB-C charging ports.
The new MG3 also boasts an advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) with features such as adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, lane-keeping assist, and automatic emergency braking.
The highlight of the MG3 is its innovative hybrid powertrain. MG refers to this system as Hybrid Plus, which combines a 1.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with an electric motor at the front axle, delivering two power outputs of 135 and 191 horsepower, along with 250 Nm of torque. This is paired with an 1.83 kWh battery pack and a three-speed automatic transmission.
According to test results, the MG3 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 8 seconds. Its fuel consumption is rated at 4.4 liters per 100 km in a combined cycle, with CO2 emissions of 100 g/km.
After SAIC, the parent company, took over the distribution of MG automobiles in Vietnam last year, the brand has continuously launched new models such as the RX 5 and MG7. In the future, it is highly likely that the MG3 will also be introduced to the Vietnamese market to compete in the small crossover/hatchback segment with a price range of under VND 500 million.
