Hyundai is reportedly working on an all-new electric pickup truck that could rival the Tesla Cybertruck.
Back in July, Hyundai was spotted dismantling a Tesla Cybertruck for analysis and research, presumably to inform the development of their own pickup.
The Korean automaker has been tight-lipped about their new truck, but sources suggest that Hyundai will offer a gasoline engine option. However, this engine won’t directly power the vehicle but rather act as a generator to extend the electric range.
Hyundai is targeting sales of 50,000 units of this new pickup annually, starting from 2029. The vehicle is expected to be a key player in their lineup. Sister company, Kia, is also planning a similar foray into the pickup market with comparable sales goals.
Hyundai aims to deliver a driving range of over 400 km and a towing capacity of around 4,000 kg. In reality, these targets are more achievable with an engine-generator setup, as current battery technology would require a massive pack to meet these goals in a pure electric vehicle.
Beyond dissecting the Tesla Cybertruck, Hyundai has also studied two other popular pickup trucks on the market to understand their success and incorporate those insights into their own design.
