Ford is set to introduce a mid-size electric pickup truck, potentially named the Ranger Lightning, in 2027.
According to Drive, Ford has announced plans to launch a new mid-size electric pickup truck in 2027, which may be called the Ranger Lightning.
In a press release, Ford confirmed its electric vehicle roadmap in the US will include “two new pickups” and a commercial van. Meanwhile, three-row electric SUVs are expected to utilize hybrid powertrains due to the “challenges” of battery costs for larger vehicles.
The new mid-size electric pickup will be positioned alongside the combustion engine-powered Ford Ranger and may be named the “Ranger Lightning” – a trademark filed in 2022. It is currently being developed by Ford’s “skunkworks” group in California.
The “skunkworks” group comprises fewer than 100 people and is headed by former Tesla engineer Alan Clarke, who played a pivotal role in developing the world’s best-selling electric car, the Tesla Model Y. The group is based south of Los Angeles, California.
Ford stated that the team is focused on the goal of “reducing costs for electric vehicles” by applying a systems approach to design, engineering, supply chain, and manufacturing to “rearchitect the entire vehicle.”
The new mid-size electric pickup is said to be the “first affordable new platform vehicle,” designed with a focus on delivering range, utility, and usability for customers.
“We’ve assembled the most talented and creative technical experts from across Ford and around the globe to lead this transformative era of Ford engineering,” said Jim Farley, Ford’s President and CEO.
Ford’s new electric vehicle platform will offer multiple body styles, catering to both consumer and commercial customers, with updatable components similar to Tesla. It will feature BlueCruise for hands-free driving on highways and Ford Pro Telematics.
Meanwhile, the launch of Ford’s large electric pickup, codenamed Project T3, has been delayed until the second half of 2027. Ford claims that Project T3 will build on the F-150 Lightning’s success and offer “features and experiences never before seen on a Ford truck, including enhanced bidirectional charging and advanced aerodynamics.”
