There’s a lot of excitement among Vietnamese consumers when it comes to new VinFast products, and the same can be said for their latest offering – the DrgnFly electric-assisted bicycle, which was officially launched on August 20th.

Priced at VND 29.69 million, the VinFast DrgnFly is currently available for order and is expected to be delivered to customers from September onwards.

Design and Features of the VinFast DrgnFly

The price of the VinFast DrgnFly has sparked some debate, as it is more expensive than common motorbikes like the Honda Wave RSX (VND 22 million) and is only slightly cheaper than a Yamaha Freego scooter (VND 30 million).

It features a high and wide handlebar, offering flexible maneuverability.

However, this model targets a younger audience who value unique and expressive modes of transportation, for whom price is not the primary concern.

The design has an off-road vibe with a hint of hip-hop flair. Its aluminum alloy frame is eye-catching, offering high strength while remaining lightweight.

Despite its relatively high price, the VinFast DrgnFly boasts impressive features that are often lacking in standard bicycles. At the front, it sports a bi-sphere LED headlight, while the rear features an integrated LED taillight within the frame, ensuring safety during low-light conditions.

In real-world testing, the VinFast DrgnFly’s headlight proved to be sufficiently bright for evening rides.

All brake levers and calipers on the VinFast DrgnFly are from Tektro, a well-known brand in the cycling world.

On the right side of the handlebar is a throttle that functions like a scooter’s throttle, as the DrgnFly is an electric-assisted bicycle.

The VinFast DrgnFly’s grip design is unusual yet practical. The rubber protrusion wraps around the rider’s palm, providing a comfortable grip for extended periods.

On the left side of the handlebar is a small switch that allows riders to adjust the power assist mode (4 modes). Users can turn the power assist on or off and set a password to enhance security.

The front suspension of the VinFast DrgnFly is air-adjustable, allowing riders to customize the stiffness/softness according to their preference and riding style.

The bike comes with wire-spoke wheels and large Kenda tires with a rugged, off-road tread pattern.

The VinFast DrgnFly’s battery pack has a capacity of 640 Wh and can be removed for charging. In the US, the Vietnamese electric-assisted bicycle uses a larger 750 Wh battery.

The 250 W motor is integrated into the rear hub but is software-limited.

The frame at the rear extends slightly beyond the seat, providing a convenient grip for carrying or lifting the bike.

Riding Experience with the VinFast DrgnFly

There isn’t much to share regarding the riding experience of a bicycle. However, the electric assist system on the VinFast DrgnFly is quite intriguing, as it utilizes sensors to detect when the rider needs to activate the electric motor.

The bike offers four riding modes: Zero (no assist, but lights are on), Eco (Economy), Sport, and Boost. In Eco mode, riders still need to pedal, but the electric motor provides just enough assistance to make pedaling feel lighter.

Without the electric assist, the VinFast DrgnFly’s pedals feel heavy on the first stroke, becoming slightly lighter once momentum is gained.

In Sport mode, the power assist kicks in earlier, as soon as the sensor detects that the rider is applying force to the pedals. The motor provides more power, helping riders accelerate quickly and maintain electric-powered movement once the speed exceeds 20 km/h. Combined with the throttle, the bike can quickly reach its maximum speed of 32 km/h and maintain it. While this speed isn’t exceptionally high, it’s relatively fast for a lightweight bicycle, and the acceleration is smooth.

As the name suggests, the Boost mode is designed to provide extra power when climbing hills. The motor delivers more force at low speeds, making it easier to tackle inclines.

The VinFast DrgnFly offers an upright riding position, providing a comfortable and relaxed posture.

With a seat height of just 79.5 cm, the bike is well-suited to the average Vietnamese build. However, the seat design only accommodates one rider comfortably. The off-road tires inspire confidence when riding on rough, gravelly surfaces, but they tend to be bouncy and noisy on paved roads. Additionally, the lack of rear suspension and the close proximity of the seat to the rear wheel mean that road vibrations are transmitted directly to the rider’s spine. Thankfully, the seat has a relatively thick cushion that helps absorb some of the impact.

When the battery is low, the electric motor won’t provide as much assist.

According to VinFast, the DrgnFly can travel up to 110 km with pedaling and electric assist, or 75 km when using the throttle continuously. In reality, a full battery charge will provide a range of around 60 km when using the Sport or Boost modes.

Since the VinFast DrgnFly is an electric-assisted bicycle, it doesn’t regenerate power when pedaling. The battery can be removed and charged at home using the provided charger. A full charge takes approximately 5 hours.

Who Should Buy the VinFast DrgnFly?

Overall, the VinFast DrgnFly is a stylish and expressive mode of transportation. This electric-assisted bicycle is ideal for casual rides within the confines of a VinHomes community, aligning with the ecosystem development philosophy of the Vingroup conglomerate.
