In the event of a flood, the best way to protect your car is to move it to higher ground, to sheltered areas, or under a sturdy roof where rising water cannot reach it. If you are unable to get your car to safety in time, there are still several options you can take to mitigate potential damage caused by flooding.
During the rainy season, the biggest threat to cars is flooding, especially water ingression, which can cause significant damage. The best way to protect your car in this situation is to move it to higher ground, out of the reach of rising water. However, if you are unable to get your car to a safe location, you can refer to the following methods to reduce potential damage caused by flooding.
Recently, social media has been flooded with images of people in flood-affected areas using tarps to protect their cars. As we know, plastic bags and tarps are highly effective in keeping out water, so they are often used by locals to wrap and protect their belongings during the flood season. This same technique can be used to save cars from being submerged.
People have been using an 8-meter green and yellow tarp, driving their car into the center, and then tying the ends together. With this method, as the water level rises, the car will float. After securely wrapping the car, the owner can then tie a rope to prevent the car from drifting away, making it easier to move the car if necessary.
Before storing your car, you may want to disconnect the battery to minimize damage to the electrical system. You can also use plastic bags to wrap fabric or clothing and stuff them into the exhaust pipe and engine air intake to prevent water from entering the combustion chamber if the water level rises too high. Be careful not to push these items too far in, as they may get stuck and become difficult to remove. It is recommended to attach a string to them for easy retrieval. However, it is not necessary to disconnect the battery, as the car’s electrical system can be used to charge phones and maintain communication with the outside world.
