The Top 10 Best-Selling Cars in Vietnam for August 2024: Mitsubishi Xforce Takes the Lead

According to a report by the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA), the total market sales in the past August 2024 reached 25,196 units, a decrease of 12.8% compared to the previous month but an increase of 12% over the same period last year. When combined with TC Group’s sales results, the total market consumed 29,875 units.

VAMA also reported that Vietnamese consumers purchased 19,129 passenger cars, 5,901 commercial vehicles, and 166 specialized vehicles last August. Compared to the previous month, passenger car sales decreased by 16%, commercial vehicle sales increased by 1%, and specialized vehicle sales decreased by 23%.

Furthermore, the sales of domestically assembled cars reached 12,064 units, while the corresponding figure for completely built-up imported cars was 13,132 units, both decreasing by 13% compared to July 2024.

The decline in the domestic car market compared to the previous month was expected due to the impact of the Lunar July and consumers’ psychological wait for the reduction in registration fees. Despite the overall downward trend, the top 10 best-selling cars in Vietnam in August 2024 still achieved impressive sales performance.

The best-selling model in the market in August 2024 was the Mitsubishi Xforce, with sales of 2,504 units. Compared to the previous month, the sales of this B-segment SUV have grown by 43.2%.

With this result, the Mitsubishi Xforce is not only the best-selling model in the market but also the leader in the B-segment SUV category. Since its launch in the Vietnamese market in March 2024, this Mitsubishi newcomer has never lost its position as the “segment leader.” This achievement is partly due to the company’s promotion program offering a 50% discount on registration fees for the GLX standard version and a 100% discount for the Exceed version of the Xforce. In addition, Mitsubishi is also offering a one-year physical insurance and a fuel voucher worth 10 million VND for customers purchasing the Premium version.

The second best-selling model was the VinFast VF5 Plus, with sales of 2,200 units, a decrease of 15.3%. With this result, the “made in Vietnam” electric car had to give up its crown to the Mitsubishi Xforce. This number brings the cumulative sales of VinFast VF5 Plus in the first eight months of 2024 to about 17,200 units, leading the market.

Next is the Ford Ranger, with sales down slightly by 0.1% to 1,274 units. However, Ford Ranger’s ranking in the top 10 has improved by two places compared to July 2024. At the same time, it continues to be the best-selling model in the pickup truck segment in the Vietnamese market today.

Mazda CX-5 ranked fourth in the top 10. This C-segment SUV sold 1,070 units, a slight increase of 2.4%. Similar to the models mentioned above, the Mazda CX-5 has long been firmly positioned as the leader in its segment, and no competitor has been able to change this. The secret to the success of the Mazda CX-5 lies in its design, which meets the tastes of Vietnamese consumers, and its convenient and safe equipment, all at a reasonable price ranging from 749 to 959 million VND.

Toyota Vios was the fifth best-selling model in the market, with sales of 1,010 units, a significant decrease of 42.1%. Despite this drop, the Toyota Vios remained the best-selling B-segment sedan in the Vietnamese market last August.

Mitsubishi Xpander ranked sixth, with sales down 32.7% to 1,003 units. This result is surprising because, in the past, the Mitsubishi MPV has always been ranked very high in the top 10 and has often been the best-selling model in the market.

Hyundai Accent ranked seventh, with sales of 937 units, a decrease of 4.8%. With this sales figure, the Korean model had to settle for second place behind its rival, the Toyota Vios, in the B-segment sedan category.

Toyota Yaris Cross followed with sales of 927 units, a decrease of 25.3%. Within the Toyota family, the Yaris Cross is currently the second best-selling model, after the Vios. In the B-segment SUV category, the Toyota Yaris Cross also ranks second, far behind the Mitsubishi Xforce.

Ranking ninth in the top 10 was the Ford Everest mid-size SUV. In August, Vietnamese consumers purchased 812 units of this model, a decrease of 14.6%. Despite its declining performance, the Ford Everest remains the top choice in the D-segment SUV category in Vietnam, despite its high price ranging from 1.099 to 1.545 billion VND.

The “last place” in the top 10 best-selling cars in Vietnam in August 2024 was the Hyundai Creta. This B-segment SUV sold 613 units, a decrease of 10.6%. It is the second best-selling model of the Hyundai brand and the third in the B-segment SUV category.

In September 2024, Vietnam’s automobile market is expected to recover after the Lunar July. In addition, the government’s decree on reducing registration fees for domestically produced and assembled cars will take effect this month.
