In recent years, the A-segment of cars has been losing its foothold in the Vietnamese market. Sales of A-segment cars have been on a downward trend as domestic consumers shift their preferences towards higher-riding vehicles such as pickup trucks, B-segment SUVs, and MPVs. The sales figures for the A-segment in August 2024 further highlight this trend.

The A-segment witnessed a decline in sales across all models in the past month. Among them, the Kia Morning continues to be the poorest performer.

Hyundai Grand i10: 310 units

During August 2024, Vietnamese consumers purchased 310 units of the Grand i10, reflecting a 22.5% decrease compared to the previous month. Despite its modest sales figures, the Hyundai Grand i10 maintains its leading position in the segment.

For September 2024, the Hyundai Grand i10 benefits from a 50% reduction in registration fees offered by the government. This incentive is likely to boost sales for this Korean-made vehicle.

The Hyundai Grand i10 received a mid-life facelift in Vietnam back in June 2024. It continues to offer six variants, with prices ranging from VND 360 million to VND 455 million.

With the updated model, the A-segment car received minor design and equipment upgrades. It is available in both sedan and hatchback body styles, as before.

Notable features of the Hyundai Grand i10 include LED daytime running lights, 15-inch alloy wheels, LED taillights, power-adjustable side mirrors with turn indicators, an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a dedicated Vietnamese navigation system, push-button start, and smart key.

Under the hood, the Hyundai Grand i10 continues to be powered by the 1.2L Kappa MPI petrol engine, delivering a maximum output of 83 horsepower and 114 Nm of peak torque. The engine is paired with either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission.

Toyota Wigo: 200 units

Similar to its rival, the Toyota Wigo experienced an unfortunate month with a 13.4% decline in sales, resulting in 200 units sold. This places the Toyota Wigo in the second position within the A-segment.

Unlike its segment competitors, the Toyota Wigo is a completely built- up (CBU) import from Indonesia. Consequently, it does not qualify for the government’s 50% reduction in registration fees, which puts it at a significant disadvantage.

The Toyota Wigo is currently offered in two variants in Vietnam, with prices ranging from VND 360 million to VND 405 million. For this price, Vietnamese customers will get features such as LED headlights, electrically adjustable and foldable side mirrors, 14-inch alloy wheels, a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and a four-speaker audio system. Additionally, the Wigo boasts segment-leading safety features like Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA), which are rarely found in this class.

The Toyota Wigo is powered by a new 1.2L petrol engine, mated to either a 5-speed manual or a Dual-CVT automatic transmission. This engine produces 87 horsepower and 113 Nm of torque.

Kia Morning: 38 units

The Kia Morning has consistently ranked last in the A-segment for an extended period, and August 2024 was no exception. This Korean model managed to sell only 38 units, reflecting a significant drop of 29.6%.

The Kia Morning is available in five variants in Vietnam, with prices ranging from VND 349 million to VND 424 million. Like the Hyundai Grand i10, it is eligible for the government’s 50% registration fee support program, which runs from September 1 to November 30, 2024.

Compared to its rivals, the Kia Morning is more affordable, but it has a few drawbacks. For instance, it hasn’t received any significant design or equipment updates in a while. Additionally, it falls short in terms of features, offering halogen headlights and lacking cruise control.

Notable features of the Kia Morning include LED daytime running lights, LED taillights, electrically adjustable and foldable side mirrors with turn indicators, 14- to 15-inch wheels, an analog instrument cluster with a multi-information display, leather upholstery, an 8-inch central display, a six-speaker audio system, and automatic climate control.

The Kia Morning is powered by a 1.25L Kappa petrol engine, producing 83 horsepower and 120 Nm of torque. It is paired with either a 4-speed automatic or a 5-speed manual transmission.
