Celebrating its 25th anniversary (1999 – 2024), the Gumball 3000 – Saigon to Singapore event presents a “supercar showcase” while also fundraising for charity, supporting Vietnam in its post-disaster recovery efforts.
Gumball 3000 is one of the world’s largest supercar rallies, first organized in 1999. This year, the event chose Ho Chi Minh City as its starting point for the first time. Although some activities had to be cut back, Gumball 3000 still garnered a lot of attention from car enthusiasts both domestically and internationally.
As usual, the highlight of this year’s Gumball 3000 was the Gumball Grid opening ceremony, which gathered over 100 supercars and sports cars from around the world. Many of these vehicles are rare and expensive, including the Porsche Carrera GT owned by a Thai billionaire.
The Porsche Carrera GT is a limited-edition model, with only 1,270 units produced globally. According to sources, there are currently five of these cars in Thailand, and only one is participating in the Gumball 3000 rally.
The Porsche Carrera GT in the rally features a black exterior with striking orange accents. It bears the number 85 out of the more than 100 supercars participating in the Gumball 3000 2024 event.
The Porsche Carrera GT was named “Best Dream Machine” by MotorWeek TV in 2005. When it was first introduced in 2004, the car was priced at approximately $450,000 (~11.04 billion VND), but its value has since tripled.
Powering the Porsche Carrera GT is a 5.7-liter V10 gasoline engine that produces 603 horsepower, coupled with a manual transmission, and a weight of just over 1,361 kg. With this engine, the Carrera GT can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in just 3.9 seconds.
As planned, today, September 15, the Gumball 3000 – Saigon to Singapore rally officially commenced with a flag-off ceremony, marking the start of the first leg of the journey from Le Loi Avenue to the famous Cu Chi Tunnels.
On the same day, the convoy will move on to Phnom Penh, Cambodia, and continue through to Angkor Wat, Cambodia – Bangkok, Krabi, Thailand – Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, before concluding the journey in Singapore on September 21, 2024, coinciding with the F1 Singapore Grand Prix 2024 (September 20-22, 2024).
