In a recent turn of events, Mazda has been slapped with a $5 million lawsuit by a man whose daughter was involved in an accident while driving the CX-50.
Joshua M., who purchased the Mazda CX-50 in May 2024, recounted the incident that unfolded when his daughter pressed the Start/Stop button on the vehicle. As the screen displayed the instruction to “Press brake to start,” she did so and shifted the car from P (Park) to D (Drive).
However, instead of moving forward, the car suddenly reversed. Despite her attempts to control the vehicle, both the power-assisted brakes and steering failed to respond. The CX-50 only came to a halt after colliding with a tree.
Following the incident, Joshua M. filed a lawsuit against Mazda, arguing that the instruction to “press brake to start” was confusing and unclear. He demands that the Japanese automaker update their information and provide detailed responses to customers.
Mazda, in their response to the customer, asserted that the CX-50 is functioning normally and that there are no issues with the vehicle’s braking and power steering systems.
On social media platforms, some people speculated that the incident could be attributed to the driver’s lack of experience or insufficient force applied to the brake pedal while simultaneously pressing the Start/Stop button.
