According to Carscoops, a study conducted by iSeeCars on a range of cars, trucks, and SUVs in the US aimed to identify which models are most likely to reach 250,000 miles, or approximately 402,000 kilometers. The results revealed that Toyota is the top automaker when it comes to providing durable vehicles for American customers.

Specifically, analysts at iSeeCars collected data from 402 million vehicles in the US and, using a computer model, concluded that most cars in the country are unlikely to reach the 402,000-kilometer mark on their odometers.

Delving further into the details, the study found that while the average likelihood for American cars to operate until they hit 402,000 kilometers was 8.6%, several Toyota models surpassed this average by up to four times.

Topping the list is the Toyota Tundra, with a 36.6% chance of reaching the 402,000-kilometer mark, closely followed by the Toyota Sequoia at 36.4%. Toyota’s dominance is evident in the top 5 most durable vehicles in the US, as determined by iSeeCars, with the Toyota 4Runner, Toyota Tacoma, and Toyota Highlander Hybrid also making the cut.

Vehicle Model Likelihood of Reaching 402,000 Kilometers (%)
Toyota Tundra 36.6
Toyota Sequoia 36.4
Toyota 4Runner 26.8
Toyota Tacoma 26.7
Toyota Highlander Hybrid 25.9
Honda Ridgeline 25.8
Chevrolet Suburban 22
Toyota Avalon 22
Lexus GX 20.7
Chevrolet Silverado 1500 18.8

Expanding our perspective, we find that the Toyota Avalon and Lexus GX occupy the eighth and ninth positions, respectively. The Toyota Highlander ranks 17th, the Toyota Camry sits at 21st, and the Toyota Prius comes in at 25th in terms of durability.

Impressively, out of the 30 most durable vehicles in the US as listed by iSeeCars, 10 models are from Toyota. Honda also makes a strong showing with 7 vehicles in the top 30, including those under the Acura brand. General Motors secures its place in the rankings with 6 models.

“Modern vehicles are becoming increasingly durable. The top 30 durable models have a 12% to 36% chance of reaching 402,000 kilometers on their odometers,” commented iSeeCars analyst Karl Brauer.

It is worth noting that iSeeCars has adjusted the definition of vehicle durability, increasing the target odometer reading from 200,000 miles (approximately 322,000 kilometers) to 250,000 miles (around 402,000 kilometers) to reflect the improved durability of modern vehicles.

“While the majority of customers believe that a vehicle’s lifespan ends at 161,000 kilometers, the top 9 models on this list have over a 20% chance of reaching the 402,000-kilometer mark,” remarked Mr. Brauer.

The iSeeCars study also revealed that SUVs are significantly more likely to reach the quarter-million-mile mark than sedans. While SUVs had an average likelihood of 7.8%, sedans lagged behind at only 5.4%.

The Ram 3500 stood out with a remarkable 42.6% chance of attaining 402,000 kilometers, surpassing the average of 19.4% for pickup trucks and also edging out its “sibling,” the Ram 1500, which clocked in at 11.5%.

Interestingly, the Carscoops website noted that none of the top 30 most durable vehicles in the US were from European or Korean automakers.
