Global sales of pure electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles surged 30.5% year-over-year in September, with China leading the pack.
According to recent findings by market research firm Rho Motion, global sales of pure electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids (collectively referred to as electric vehicles) rose 30.5% year-over-year in September. Specifically, a total of 1.7 million vehicles were sold worldwide, surpassing the previous record set in December 2023 by over 150,000 units.
“This record-breaking month brings new hope to the industry,” said Charles Lester, Data Director at Rho Motion, in a statement. However, Lester also pointed out the “astonishing” disparity in sales performance across regions.
Cumulative sales of electric vehicles from January to September reached 11.5 million globally, a 22% increase year-over-year, with China leading the way. The country accounted for 7.2 million electric vehicles sold during this period, marking a significant 35% rise.
Specifically, in September, 65% of global electric vehicle sales came from China, where consumers purchased 1.1 million units. This follows another record-breaking month in August 2024, when the country sold an impressive 1 million electric vehicles.
The North American market witnessed a 10% growth, totaling 1.3 million vehicles. Europe followed suit, with 2.2 million electric vehicles sold between January and September.
In contrast, the European Union, the United Kingdom, and EFTA countries experienced a 4% decline in electric vehicle sales during the first nine months of the year compared to 2023.
This record-breaking month for electric vehicle sales has breathed new life into the industry. While the shift towards vehicle electrification seems inevitable, the recent slowdown in some markets had sown seeds of doubt. However, this trend now appears to be reversing. Yet, the gap between regions is significant, with China alone accounting for more than half of global electric vehicle sales. Meanwhile, Europe is witnessing a decline in sales, while the US and Canada are experiencing steady growth.
