Compact, lightweight, and affordable, e-bikes are a popular choice for many families.
However, their major drawback is their limited battery life, which restricts their range. To address this challenge, Tongneng New Energy has invented a new type of battery that offers an impressive range of up to 600km per charge.
E-bikes are ideal for short-distance travel, such as grocery shopping, school runs, or commuting to work. Given their convenience, compact size, speed, and affordability, it’s not unusual for a family to own multiple e-bikes. However, e-bikes have one significant drawback: their batteries don’t last long, and they need frequent charging after covering only short distances. In other words, while e-bikes are convenient, their “heart”—the battery—is not very powerful. Weak batteries that require frequent charging are a constant worry for many e-bike users.
This raises the question: is there a battery with a larger capacity that can last longer and enable e-bikes to travel hundreds of kilometers on a single charge or without the need for frequent charging? This is likely a question that many e-bike users have asked.
Tongneng New Energy, a Chinese new energy company specializing in the development and production of lithium-sulfur batteries, has achieved extraordinary results through internal testing. Specifically, the company used lithium-sulfur batteries to replace conventional e-bike batteries, theoretically increasing the travel range by up to 13 times.
Technicians from Tongneng New Energy purchased a typical e-bike from the market, fully charged it, and found that it could only travel 48 kilometers before running out of power. It’s important to note that this electric bike used a common type of lead-acid battery with four battery packs, weighing around 11.8 kg.
During the testing process, the Tongneng New Energy technicians did not install all four lithium-sulfur battery packs of equivalent capacity. Instead, they equipped the bike with just one pack of the same size, weighing only 1.9 kg.
By removing three lead-acid batteries and reducing the weight by 10 kg, how far could a single lithium-sulfur battery pack take the e-bike? The test results showed an impressive average range of 99 kilometers after three test runs, just one kilometer short of the 100-kilometer mark.
A range of nearly 100 kilometers with a single battery pack and a weight reduction of 10 kg—this result is surprising. However, Tongneng New Energy technicians believe that this is not the ideal outcome.
According to reports, Tongneng New Energy’s latest successful development in lithium-sulfur batteries boasts an energy density of 700wh/kg, three to five times higher than that of the popular lithium-ion batteries currently on the market.
In practical terms, under normal conditions, an electric bike equipped with a lithium battery can travel approximately 400-600 kilometers. But under the same conditions, if you replace it with this new lithium-sulfur battery, the range can reach over 1,200 kilometers.
So, how far can an e-bike go with a lithium-sulfur battery? Tongneng New Energy technicians explain that the energy density of lithium-sulfur batteries is measured in wh/kg.
To put it into perspective, the aforementioned e-bike, if fitted with a lithium-sulfur battery of the same weight (11.8kg), could theoretically travel over 610 kilometers, compared to just 48 kilometers with a conventional battery. The prospect of an e-bike being able to cover over 600 kilometers on a single charge is undoubtedly exciting for e-bike owners.
Of course, the claim that e-bikes can travel over 600 kilometers is still theoretical, based on calculations from internal test data. To determine accurate data, Tongneng New Energy will conduct a real-world test of an e-bike equipped with a lithium-sulfur battery, aiming to conquer the 600-kilometer mark.
A Tongneng New Energy technician said, “We are confident that we will pass the test and achieve favorable results.”
