Hyundai Mobis has collaborated with German optics company Zeiss to develop an innovative 3D full-screen display technology for automobiles, which can replace both the instrument cluster and the central infotainment screen.

Following the trend of modernization, automotive instrument clusters and infotainment systems are getting larger, integrating more functions and new technologies. Luxury vehicles like the Cadillac Escalade with its 55-inch display or the Lincoln Navigator with a 48-inch screen are prime examples. However, most car manufacturers have not yet found a solution to make such large displays aesthetically pleasing and harmonious with the rest of the interior design.

Recently, Hyundai Mobis – the technology development arm of the Hyundai Group – unveiled a novel solution to eliminate the need for these two screens in vehicles. Instead, cars will be equipped with a 3D holographic display technology integrated into the windshield.

This product is the result of a collaboration between Hyundai Mobis and Zeiss, a renowned optics company. Essentially, this technology turns the windshield into a premium HUD (heads-up display) that can replace both the instrument cluster and the infotainment system. With this innovation, drivers can access various information without taking their eyes off the road.

Hyundai Mobis explained that the system consists of a high-tech projector and an ultra-thin film layer (only 100 micrometers thick – thinner than a human hair) adhered to the windshield. The projector casts 3D images onto the film layer, effectively turning it into a display that sits within the driver’s line of sight.

Hyundai stated that this technology has moved past the development phase and has been presented to other automobile manufacturers for potential future adoption. If all goes well, cars equipped with this massive HUD display could enter production as early as 2027.
