Drivers who drive against traffic or reverse on expressways face hefty fines and complete license point deduction.

This information is included in the fourth draft of the Decree detailing the administrative sanctions for violations of road traffic order and safety, as well as the point deduction and restoration system for driving licenses, which was recently submitted by the Ministry of Public Security to the Government. If approved, the regulations will take effect from January 1, 2025.

Specifically, the draft proposes increasing the fine from the current level of VND 16-18 million to VND 30-40 million for drivers of automobiles who drive against traffic or reverse on expressways, excluding emergency vehicles on duty as stipulated.

In addition, the drafting agency also proposes deducting all 12 points from the driving license of those who drive against traffic or reverse on expressways.

For stopping or parking on expressways without proper signaling or warning devices, a fine of VND 12-14 million is suggested (currently VND 10-12 million). This includes failing to use emergency lights and placing warning signs or lights behind the vehicle, with a minimum distance of 150m, when the vehicle encounters an issue.

Additionally, driving in the emergency lane or on the shoulder of an expressway, and failing to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead, will result in a proposed fine of VND 4-6 million. Transferring lanes without using indicators or doing so in an unauthorized area will also incur the same penalty.

In the first seven months of 2024, there were 112 road traffic accidents on Vietnam’s expressways, resulting in 46 deaths and 82 injuries. While expressway accidents account for only 1% of the country’s total road accidents, they often lead to severe or very severe consequences.

The primary cause of these accidents is attributed to driver negligence, lack of attention, and failure to maintain a safe distance while driving on expressways.
