Toyota is reportedly planning to unveil the new generation of its popular Hilux model towards the end of 2025.
The new Toyota Hilux is expected to undergo significant exterior improvements, while its chassis system will remain largely unchanged or receive only minor upgrades. As such, not much is anticipated in terms of powertrain enhancements.
However, some sources suggest that Toyota is testing a new 2.0L 4-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine for the Hilux. This engine is rumored to produce up to 300 horsepower and will likely be paired with a 6-speed manual transmission option.
Compared to its older engines, Toyota’s new 2.0L engine boasts a 30% better thermal efficiency, contributing to reduced CO2 emissions. Additionally, the new engine is more compact yet delivers substantially higher performance.
There are also rumors about Toyota developing another engine with the same cylinder count but a smaller displacement of 1.5L. This engine is said to offer 30% better fuel efficiency compared to the standard 2.5L engine currently in use.
Notably, this new engine is designed to be compatible with various fuels, including gasoline, conventional diesel, and carbon-neutral alternatives such as ethanol, synthetic gasoline, and liquid hydrogen.
The current Toyota Hilux is equipped with a 2.8L 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine that generates 221 horsepower. With these specifications, the Toyota pickup truck struggles to compete with rivals like the Ford Ranger Raptor, justifying the need for upgrades.
