Kia Enters the Mid-Size Truck Segment with the All-New Tasman
In late October, Kia made waves by unveiling its first-ever mid-size truck, the Tasman.
This marks a significant shift for the South Korean brand as it ventures into the competitive world of trucks, long dominated by American and Japanese automakers.
Kia Tasman offers three distinct models: the Standard, the X-Line geared towards urban environments, and the X-Pro, an off-road specialist. It comes in two cab styles: a single cab optimized for cargo and a double cab for everyday use and leisure.
The Tasman boasts impressive dimensions: 5,410 mm in length, 1,930 mm in width, and 1,870 mm in height (the two premium versions stand at 1,890 mm and 1,920 mm, respectively). It rides on a 3,270 mm wheelbase and has a default water-wading capacity of 800 mm. The front-wheel-drive model offers 231 mm of ground clearance, while the four-wheel-drive variant provides 224 mm.
The Tasman X-Pro takes off-road capabilities up a notch with an increased ground clearance of 252 mm, thanks to a 28 mm lift, and electronic differential lock.
Kia’s inaugural truck stands out from the crowd with its unique design, challenging the aesthetic norms of the truck segment.
Controversial Yet Adaptable Exterior Design
The Kia Tasman has sparked conversations with its bold and unconventional looks. Kia took a daring approach by departing from the familiar design language prevalent in trucks for decades.
The front end exudes toughness with Kia’s signature “tiger nose” grille, complemented by a robust and elevated front bumper. Meanwhile, the Starmap headlamps are positioned on the sides, connecting to the front wheel arches. The rear adopts a simpler approach with stylized C-shaped taillights and a central embossed Kia logo on the tailgate.
Modern and Sophisticated Interior
While the exterior may divide opinions, the interior of the Tasman is a harmonious blend of simplicity and balance. The dashboard design is intuitive and user-friendly.
It features a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 5-inch screen for climate control, and a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The Harman Kardon premium sound system with eight speakers elevates the in-cabin experience.
Kia also showcases its commitment to sustainability by incorporating eco-friendly materials, such as recycled PET fabric and bio-based synthetic leather, into the cabin.
A Practical and Versatile Truck
The Kia Tasman excels in practicality and versatility. It includes a folding table in the center console, a 33-liter storage compartment under the rear seats, and reclining rear seats. The boxy design ensures ample head, shoulder, and legroom for rear passengers, leading the segment in comfort.
The double cab version offers a spacious cargo bed measuring 1,512 mm in length, 1,572 mm in width, and 540 mm in depth, resulting in a substantial 1,173 liters of volume. With a maximum towing capacity of 3,500 kg, the Tasman can handle payloads of up to 1,017 kg for the four-wheel-drive model and 1,195 kg for the front-wheel-drive variant.
The cargo bed is packed with convenient features, including lighting, integrated power outlets, a small table, and a sliding floor for easy loading and unloading of bulky items.
Kia offers 13 accessories to customize the bed, allowing owners to adapt the Tasman to their specific needs and preferences.
Ladder Frame Chassis and a Choice of Turbocharged Gasoline or Diesel Engines
Depending on the market, the Kia Tasman will be offered with a choice of engines tailored to regional preferences. In South Korea, it is powered by a 2.5-liter gasoline engine producing 277 horsepower. Meanwhile, the Australian market receives a 2.2-liter diesel engine generating 207 horsepower.
Like its rivals, the Tasman comes with terrain-specific drive modes, such as sand, mud, snow, and gravel. The X-Pro model, tailored for off-roading, introduces the X-Trek mode, essentially a low-speed cruise control that lets the driver focus on steering and braking. Additionally, it features a Ground View Monitor, providing a real-time view of the area beneath the vehicle.
Kia will initially launch the Tasman in South Korea, followed by Australia, Africa, and the Middle East. The company has high hopes for the Saudi Arabian market, as evidenced by its debut at the Jeddah International Motor Show, held from October 29 to November 2.
