Mazda’s leadership has confirmed that the Iconic SP concept, unveiled last year, will enter commercial production in the near future.
About a year ago, Mazda grabbed attention with the unveiling of the Iconic SP concept – a stunning retro-style coupe featuring a hybrid powertrain that combines a rotary engine with an electric motor. After much speculation, the Japanese automaker has officially confirmed that a production version of the Iconic SP will hit the market in the coming years.
“This concept is not just a show car,” said Masashi Nakayama, Mazda’s Design Director, in an interview with the media. “It was designed with the real intention of putting it into production in the near future.”
The production version of the Iconic SP will serve as a replacement for the RX-7 and RX-8 in Mazda’s lineup. Additionally, the Japanese automaker may introduce a scaled-down version of this concept, intended to succeed the MX-5 roadster.
The production version is expected to retain most of the distinctive features of the concept, including pop-up headlights, classic round taillights, and a shield-shaped grille. According to Mazda, every line on the Iconic SP has been carefully calculated to ensure visual harmony and functionality.
Aside from its eye-catching design, the Iconic SP’s engine is also noteworthy. Specifically, this concept car is equipped with a 365-horsepower hybrid system, where a rotary engine powers an electric motor. The company claims that this system can reduce emissions by up to 90%.
Moreover, Mazda is testing a new technology that captures CO2 from exhaust gases. If successful and incorporated into commercial production, this technology could play a significant role in Mazda’s electrification future.
