Volkswagen has revealed details of its 2025 Golf lineup for the US market, and the good or bad news depends on whether you’re a fan of the GTI or the R.

The not-so-good news for fans of the Golf GTI is that the world’s most famous GTI will be available in the United States, but it won’t be getting the power upgrade that European buyers are getting in 2025. Over there, the GTI has been boosted from 242 horsepower to 262 horsepower, bringing it closer to the 296-hp Clubsport model.

2025 Volkswagen Golf GTI Arrives in US Without 262-HP Tune, But Golf R Gets 328 HP

Instead, the 2025 US-spec Volkswagen Golf GTI is rated at 242 horsepower this year, making it one horsepower more powerful than last year’s car. There’s no mention of the Clubsport, and worse still, customers can no longer buy the GTI with a six-speed manual transmission. The seven-speed DSG is now mandatory.

The Volkswagen Golf GTI R also loses the manual option, but at least it consoles players with the promise of more power than any production Golf has ever deployed. Last year’s GTI R produced 315 horsepower, but the 2025 hatchback pumps out 328 horsepower, similar to the 2025 European R and last year’s special edition with 333 horsepower, which wasn’t available in the US.

Both Golf Mk8.5 models benefit from a larger 12.9-inch touchscreen, which is more usefully sized and addresses one of the issues with the old Mk8, where the touch-sensitive temperature sliders below the screen were invisible at night. The touch buttons on the Mk8 GTI’s steering wheel have also been replaced with old-school physical buttons.

Both the GTI and R now feature a glowing round VW logo in the middle of the standard bar-style LED headlights, new bumpers, and improved equipment levels.

As with the 2024 model, the GTI is available in S, SE, and Autobahn trims, while the R is offered in a standard or Black Edition trim with dark details, black wheels, brakes, and a touch of carbon.

Or, if you prefer to make a ruckus rather than sneak around, there’s the Euro Style package, which includes fabric seats, a sunroof, 19-inch forged alloy wheels (20% lighter than the stock ones), and an Akrapovic titanium exhaust.
