According to Carscoops, the third-generation Nissan Rogue, produced from 2021 to 2023, is facing an unexpected issue. Specifically, a faulty PCV valve is causing the mid-size crossover’s cabin to be potentially filled with the smell of gasoline.

A lawsuit has been filed in a US district court, targeting the Nissan Rouge models equipped with a 1.5L turbocharged three-cylinder engine. The lawsuit alleges that the faulty PCV valve components allow fuel to seep through the spongy rubber parts.

The court documents state that the gasoline odor then infiltrates the cabin, causing discomfort to the occupants and potentially creating a safety hazard for passengers and other road users.

Plaintiff Michael E. states that he purchased a 2023 Nissan Rogue in December 2022 from Jeffrey Automotive Group dealership.

He later noticed a strong gasoline odor inside the vehicle. When he took the car to the dealership, Michael E. was confirmed that the issue existed but could not be fixed at that time.

Another owner, Kelly W., who purchased a 2023 Nissan Rogue, noticed the gasoline odor about a month after buying the vehicle. Similar to Michael E., the dealership confirmed that there was no solution to the gasoline odor infiltrating the cabin.

Prior to the lawsuit, numerous customers had submitted reports to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) regarding this issue.

“The strong gasoline odor gives us headaches, dizziness, and nausea,” one owner reported.

The owner of another Nissan Rogue stated that after driving about 32 km, he stopped the engine for a short time, and when he restarted it, the cabin was filled with the smell of gasoline, making him nauseous and sometimes teary-eyed.

Nissan, for its part, argues that the plaintiffs are relying on “anonymous online complaints” found after purchasing the vehicles. Nissan also contends that the plaintiffs were wrong to assert that Nissan should have known about the gasoline odor issue in the Rogue models.

According to Carscoops, Nissan has asked the court to dismiss the lawsuit.
