The Tesla Cybertruck has sparked much debate since its launch, with its unique design polarizing opinions. But there’s more to this electric pickup truck than meets the eye.

Beneath its rugged exterior, the Tesla Cybertruck is one of the first vehicles to utilize cold-rolled stainless steel for its body. This super-strong material is capable of withstanding low-caliber (9mm) bullets.

The use of this steel gives the Cybertruck exceptional rigidity, impact resistance, and maximum safety for its occupants. While hot-rolled steel is more malleable and easier to shape, it lacks the strength and hardness of cold-rolled steel, which requires more sophisticated technology and technical expertise to produce, resulting in a 20-50% higher production cost.

Tesla has chosen to incur these higher production costs to deliver a superior product to its customers. The 30X cold-rolled stainless steel used in the Cybertruck is extremely hard, making it challenging to stamp and bend. Tesla employs more powerful presses and precise engineering techniques to achieve the truck’s distinctive sharp-edged design. Even the steel-cutting process requires a different technique compared to hot-rolled steel.

Additionally, the high durability of cold-rolled steel makes painting and surface finishing more complicated, necessitating special protective coatings to maintain aesthetics and protect against environmental factors.

Typically, other vehicles are designed with bodies that absorb impact forces during collisions, minimizing injuries to occupants and pedestrians. However, the Cybertruck’s ultra-hard stainless steel body doesn’t absorb impact; instead, it transfers the force to the object it collides with, which can be dangerous for other vehicles and pedestrians.

This characteristic has made it challenging for the Tesla Cybertruck to obtain approval for road use in Europe, which has stringent regulations to protect pedestrians. The truck’s chassis system also presents a challenge when it comes to repair costs. If the body sustains damage and needs replacement, the cost can range from $10,000 to $15,000 (254.25 – 381.3 million VND). This high cost is due to the difficulty of replacing individual parts, as the Cybertruck’s rigid steel frame often requires a complete frame replacement.

Not only are replacement and repair costs high, but the waiting time for repairs can also be lengthy. While a conventional car may take a day to repair, the Cybertruck could take several days or even a week due to the need for special equipment and complex repair techniques. Adding to the challenge, not all repair centers are equipped to handle the Cybertruck, making it a daunting task for owners to find suitable repair facilities.
