According to Carscoops, nearly 1.7 million Honda vehicles in the US have been recalled due to a steering system issue. This problem isn’t isolated to the US, as it also affects over 240,000 vehicles in Canada and 58,000 in Mexico. The recall notice comes three years after the first complaint about this issue was lodged with the Japanese automaker.
Honda found that the affected vehicles had a worm gear in the steering gearbox that was manufactured incorrectly. This worm gear can bulge during use, leading to potential collisions between components. Additionally, the front screw spring was installed incorrectly, causing uneven contact between the gears.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) warns that this can make it difficult for drivers to control and steer their vehicles, increasing the risk of accidents on the road.
The specific number of Honda vehicles recalled in the US is 1,693,505. This includes Honda Civic sedans, both gasoline and hybrid models, manufactured between 2021 and 2024. The recall also affects the Civic hatchback variants, produced from 2021 to 2023, as well as the high-performance Civic Type R sedan (2022-2024), and several Acura models, including the Integra, CR-V, and HR-V.
All affected vehicle owners will be notified about the timing and instructions for bringing their cars to authorized dealers or service centers to have the gear spring replaced free of charge starting in November.
