The BMW M3, which made its debut in 1986, created a strong impression on Bimmer enthusiasts globally, and even today, this high-performance car remains a top choice for those looking to buy a new BMW. The power, sports capabilities, and unique driving experience it offers set it apart from standard vehicles, and BMW M has become the benchmark for car enthusiasts.

In Vietnam, there are almost eight BMW M3s, but until now, no BMW M3 E30 has been spotted, which is why a BMW car with an appearance resembling the M3 E30 being transported on a rescue vehicle on Huynh Thuc Khang Street, Dong Da District, Hanoi, quickly attracted the attention of Vietnamese Bimmer enthusiasts.

There are two possible scenarios here: either the owner of a BMW 3-Series E30 has upgraded their car’s body kit to the M3 version, or this is an original BMW M3 E30 that has recently been imported into Vietnam with a Laos or Cambodian license plate, or it’s a mysterious car that has been around for a while but has only now come to light.

The first BMW M3 in the world was based on the 3-Series E30 and was intended as a special edition certified to meet the rules of the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft and Group A Touring, requiring a total production of 5,000 cars.

It was introduced to the public at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1985 and went into production from March 1986 to June 1991. The M3 E30 was mainly produced as a coupe, but a limited number of convertible models were also manufactured.

Compared to the standard version, the BMW M3 E30 featured a front splitter, a rear spoiler, sill panels, and modifications to the body in the area of the rear window (pillar C) and trunk lid, which improved aerodynamics. For aerodynamic reasons, the rear window was flattened, and the rear doors were made of lightweight fiberglass-reinforced plastic, raised by about 40 mm to improve airflow.

The changes at the rear of the car resulted in reduced lift and improved straight-line stability. Additionally, the windshield was bonded in place—unlike other E30 models, which had rubber-framed windows and pipes.

As a result, the M3 achieved a relatively low drag coefficient of Cd = 0.33 compared to Cd = 0.38 for the standard 3 Series. The only exterior parts that were the same on the 3 Series and M3 were the hood, roof panel, and sunroof. Brake calipers, brake discs, and master cylinders were unique to the M3 model.

The transmission was a 5-speed Getrag 265 manual. The European models featured a dog-leg version with close ratios and a 1:1 ratio for the fifth gear. The North American models used a traditional H-pattern with wider gear spacing and an overdriven fifth gear. A limited-slip differential was standard equipment.

In 2004, Sports Car International ranked the M3 E30 sixth on their list of Top Sports Cars of the 1980s. In 2007, Automobile Magazine included the M3 E30 in their “5 Greatest Drivers’ Cars of All Time” list as part of their 25 Greatest Cars of All Time.
