Seven months after its debut as a concept car at the Monaco Formula 1 Grand Prix, Mercedes-Benz officially unveiled the exclusive Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed in Abu Dhabi. This is the first model in the new Mythos family and will be limited to just 250 units worldwide.
Based on the current Mercedes SL, the PureSpeed has undergone a comprehensive redesign and will be significantly more expensive, although no official pricing details have been confirmed at this stage.
As a speedster, the Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed forgoes a traditional windshield and A-pillars. Instead, it features a high-strength steel halo inspired by Formula 1 racing, which provides safety for the occupant. The design bears a strong resemblance to the Mercedes-AMG GT Speedster crafted by the German company Bussink a few years ago.
Each PureSpeed features a front end similar to the standard SL, although some significant changes have been made, such as reshaped air intakes and a unique hood to enhance aerodynamics. A custom rear diffuser and trunk lid have also been designed to compensate for the absence of a roof.
Another highlight is the unique 21-inch forged aluminum wheels with carbon fiber shells, along with a retractable rear wing. An active aerodynamic component is also hidden in the underbody, helping to increase downforce on the front axle.
Complementing the exterior changes is a host of special interior elements. This includes the AMG Performance bucket seats with exclusive upholstery and decorative stitching.
Mercedes has also adorned the door sills with leather, added a striking two-tone leather-wrapped steering wheel, and fitted a custom IWC Schaffhausen analog clock to the dashboard.
Interestingly, Mercedes-AMG appears to have made no changes to the car’s 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine. As such, it continues to produce 577 horsepower and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm) of torque, just like the regular SL 63 that anyone can buy from a Mercedes dealership.
Nevertheless, this powertrain still provides more than enough power for the windshield and roofless car, enabling it to sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds and reach a top speed of 196 mph (315 km/h).
Coupled with the potent V8 is a 9-speed transmission that sends power to all four wheels. Like other Mercedes models, the PureSpeed is equipped with the brand’s Active Ride Control system for optimized suspension. Carbon-ceramic brakes are standard, as is an active rear-wheel steering system.
