Consumer Reports Unveils the Top 10 Most Reliable Car Brands for 2024
This list is based on independent surveys conducted by Consumer Reports regarding owner satisfaction and the issues they face with their vehicles.
Similar to previous years, Japanese manufacturers dominated the top spots, with Subaru, Honda, Toyota, Lexus, Mazda, and Acura making the cut. The list also included German brands Audi and BMW, as well as Kia and Hyundai from South Korea.
1. Subaru
CR Reliability Rating: 68/100
Subaru surprisingly topped the list as the safest car brand according to Consumer Reports. Typically, this position is held by Toyota or its luxury counterpart, Lexus.
Consumer Reports noted that two of Subaru’s models, the Forester and Impreza, scored above average, while the rest of their lineup ranged from average to above average. The only vehicle in Subaru’s lineup that scored below average was the Solterra, an electric vehicle that is a rebadged version of the Toyota bZ4X.
2. Lexus
CR Reliability Rating: 65/100
Lexus, Toyota’s luxury brand, secured the second position in Consumer Reports’ most reliable brands for 2024. Lexus vehicles have long been renowned for their highly reliable powertrains. Consumer Reports found that four out of seven models surveyed scored above average, while the remaining three scored average.
3. Toyota
CR Reliability Rating: 62/100
Toyota has built a reputation for producing some of the most durable vehicles globally. However, reports of issues with models like the Tundra and bZ4X, along with a recall of over 100,000 pickup trucks and SUVs due to engine-related problems, pushed the brand to third place. Nonetheless, Consumer Reports still considers Toyota one of the world’s most reliable brands, with 11 models scoring above average.
4. Honda
CR Reliability Rating: 59/100
It’s no surprise that Honda secured the fourth spot on Consumer Reports’ list of the most reliable car brands for 2024. Like Toyota, Honda is known for its dependable vehicles that can rack up hundreds of thousands of miles with regular maintenance. The Japanese automaker had three models scoring above average in the survey, while seven models scored average.
5. Acura
CR Reliability Rating: 55/100
Acura, Honda’s luxury brand, closely followed in Consumer Reports’ 2024 reliability rankings. Acura’s current lineup consists of five products, including two sedans and three SUVs.
6. Mazda
CR Reliability Rating: 55/100
Mazda, another Japanese automaker, ranked sixth after Acura. While not as popular as giants like Toyota or Honda, Mazda has established a reputation for solid construction and durable powertrains. The reason for Mazda’s lower ranking seems to be the CX-90 model, which scored below average in its hybrid configuration. According to Consumer Reports, both the gasoline and hybrid versions of the CX-90 exhibited some issues with the transmission, driving, suspension, and display.
7. Audi
CR Reliability Rating: 54/100
Audi’s inclusion in this year’s list came as a surprise, as German brands are not typically known for their reliability. However, Consumer Reports found that Audi’s current products have excellent build quality, even in their most affordable lines. The downside is that Audi’s maintenance and repair costs can be quite high.
8. BMW
CR Reliability Rating: 53/100
BMW is the second European brand on Consumer Reports’ list, ranking eighth among the most reliable brands. Over the past year, BMW has offered a range of products with significantly higher reliability than in previous years, including not just their high-performance M vehicles but also their sedans and SUVs. Similar to other hybrid vehicles mentioned in their report, Consumer Reports noted that the hybrid X5 scored lower than its gasoline-only counterpart in terms of reliability.
9. Kia
CR Reliability Rating: 51/100
Kia is the first South Korean brand to appear on the list, ranking ninth, just behind BMW. Once questioned for their quality, Kia has stepped up their game and become a force in the affordable car segment, offering stylish designs, advanced technologies, and attractive pricing.
10. Hyundai
CR Reliability Rating: 50/100
Rounding out Consumer Reports’ list of the top 10 most reliable car manufacturers for 2024 is Hyundai. Over the past decade, Hyundai has worked tirelessly to introduce high-quality, affordable vehicles, resulting in a sales boom and increased brand presence.
