The Vietnam Motor Show 2024 (VMS 2024) showcased an array of automotive innovations, with a theme centered around “Technology Opens the Green Future.” Most participating brands featured at least one hybrid or electric vehicle in their exhibition, except for Mitsubishi and Isuzu, who maintained their focus on gasoline-powered vehicles.

Pickup Trucks Take Center Stage

Both Isuzu and Mitsubishi chose to highlight their pickup trucks as the stars of their respective displays at VMS 2024, and both companies introduced significant updates to these models. The Mitsubishi Triton, in its third generation, was unveiled at the beginning of September, boasting a sportier and more robust design that has been well-received by Vietnamese customers. Similarly, Isuzu took the opportunity at VMS 2024 to introduce an upgraded version of their D-Max pickup, along with its new price range.

Isuzu announced that the D-Max would be priced between 650 million and 880 million VND, while the Mitsubishi Triton, previously launched, is priced from 655 million to 924 million VND. In the Vietnamese market, the Ford Ranger continues to dominate the pickup truck segment, with the Mitsubishi Triton holding the second position, and the Isuzu D-Max yet to gain similar popularity.

Familiar Faces

Beyond the spotlight on pickup trucks, the Mitsubishi and Isuzu booths at VMS 2024 also showcased some of their familiar models. Mitsubishi’s Xpander, Xforce, and Attrage attracted significant attention, with the Xpander and Xforce currently being the brand’s top-selling models in Vietnam. These two vehicles are leading their respective segments, with the Xpander being one of the best-selling MPVs, and the Xforce, launched in March, quickly rising to the top of the urban SUV category. However, the Mitsubishi Attrage has struggled to compete in the B-segment sedan market.

Isuzu, on the other hand, displayed their 7-seater SUV, the Isuzu mu-X, alongside two commercial vehicles: the NMR Smoother, a truck with an automatic transmission, and the FRR-Q, a super-long truck bed. Their booth also featured a virtual reality driving simulation experience.

Isuzu’s commercial trucks continue to be their primary sales driver in Vietnam, with a contribution of 6,559 units sold in the first nine months. The mu-X SUV sold 160 units during the same period, while the D-Max pickup sold 341 units.
