In a recent development, Proton, a Malaysian automotive brand, has exported 200 units of its X50 model to Vietnam.

This information was shared by Jerry Gan, the CEO of Geely Auto, during the launch event of the Proton eMas 7 electric vehicle, as reported by Paultan.

Details regarding the product strategy and launch timeline for the Proton X50 in Vietnam remain undisclosed. Interestingly, the Proton X50 is not an original Proton model but a rebadged version of the Geely Binyue. Depending on the market, this crossover vehicle goes by different names, such as Geely Coolray in the Philippines and BelGee X50 in Belarus and Russia.

According to sources, the 200 Proton X50 vehicles exported to Vietnam will not bear the Proton logo. Instead, they will be branded under Geely, Proton’s parent company and Tasco’s joint venture partner in Vietnam.

The Proton X50 is positioned in the B-segment CUV category, with dimensions of 4,330 mm in length, 1,800 mm in width, and 1,609 mm in height, along with a wheelbase of 2,600 mm. This Malaysian offering will compete against the likes of the Kia Seltos, Honda HR-V, and Hyundai Creta in the Vietnamese market.

Under the hood, the CUV is powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine, producing 150 horsepower and a peak torque of 226 Nm. It is paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission that features simulated gear ratios but lacks steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

Proton’s export of the X50 to Vietnam underscores the company’s ambition to expand its market presence internationally. Recently, Proton announced the establishment of the Advanced High-Tech Valley (AHTV) in Tanjong Malim, aiming to transform the location into an international automotive hub for NEV (new energy vehicles) and attract domestic and foreign investments.
