The familiar name of Toyota Camry continues to lead the global D-segment sedan market in 2024. Toyota sold 579,733 units of the Camry to global customers last year, a 9.2% decrease. This Japanese model holds a 7.2% market share in the world’s D-segment sedan market.

The US market contributed significantly to the Toyota Camry’s 2024 performance. American consumers purchased a total of 309,875 Camrys last year, representing a 6.6% growth.

In Vietnam, the Toyota Camry is also the top-selling D-segment sedan. However, its sales are modest, with 1,333 units sold.

Toyota Camry remains the leader in the global D-segment sedan market in 2024.

The second position in the global D-segment sedan market goes to the Tesla Model 3. Sales of this American electric car reached 488,699 units, a 1.6% decrease. Most of these vehicles were sold in the two large markets of China and the United States. In 2024, 176,793 Tesla Model 3s were delivered to Chinese consumers.

Right behind the Tesla Model 3 is a Chinese model, the BYD Qin Plus. Its cumulative sales in 2024 reached 480,053 units, a growth of 10.6%. Unsurprisingly, most of its sales were generated in the domestic Chinese market. Out of those, 480,025 units were sold to Chinese consumers. This model was also the third best-selling car in the populous country last year, following the BYD Song and Tesla Model Y.

Ranking fourth in the top 10 best-selling D-segment cars globally in 2024 is the Honda Accord. Toyota Camry’s direct rival sold 359,370 units, a 12.1% decline. Similar to its Japanese counterpart, the Honda Accord made it to the list thanks to the US market. Americans purchased 162,723 Accords in 2024, a 17.8% decrease.

In Vietnam, the Honda Accord was the least-sold model in the market, with only 91 units sold last year, despite the brand continuously reducing the price by over VND 200 million for this D-segment sedan in the past six months.

Following the Honda Accord is its fellow Japanese model, the Nissan Sylphy, with 345,765 units sold, a 9.4% decline. This result was made possible by the Chinese market, where 342,395 units were sold, a 9.5% decrease. The Nissan Sylphy is the best-selling model of the brand in China, Vietnam’s neighboring country.

The Volkswagen Passat ranks sixth in the top 10, with sales growing by 14.8% to 339,640 units. Europe and China are the two key markets for this D-segment sedan. China contributed 254,103 units, a 25.4% increase.

The Passat is one of the two Volkswagen models in the top 10, along with the Lavida. Ranking seventh, the Volkswagen Lavida recorded sales of 322,972 units, a 6.6% decline. Almost all of these sales came from the Chinese market. Chinese consumers purchased 322,933 Volkswagen Lavidas last year, a 6.6% decrease.

The eighth position goes to the BMW 3-Series, with 317,228 units sold, a slight increase of 2.2%. This BMW member is also the best-selling luxury D-segment sedan globally last year.

Right behind the BMW 3-Series is its direct rival, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. Compared to the 3-Series, the C-Class had significantly lower sales, with 286,629 units sold, an 8% decline.

The last model in the top 10 best-selling D-segment cars globally in 2024 is the BYD Qin L. Sales of this Chinese car reached 229,591 units. This number is impressive, considering the Qin L is a new model in the Chinese market.

Overall, global D-segment sedan buyers prefer German and Japanese cars. There are four German models and three Japanese representatives in the above top 10 list.
