Ford’s CEO Jim Farley announced the development of EREV technology, which will be featured in their upcoming large SUVs and pickup trucks.
In a recent investor meeting, CEO Jim Farley shared that Ford is working on extended-range electric vehicles (EREV). He emphasized that this hybrid technology is an ideal solution for large SUVs and pickup trucks.
This announcement comes just months after Ford scrapped plans for a three-row electric SUV. Instead, Ford shifted its focus to hybrid models, aiming to better meet customer needs.
Considering Ford’s current product lineup, vehicles like the Expedition, F-150, and Explorer are likely candidates for EREV versions. The mid-size SUV could also offer an EREV option as it shares a platform with the Ranger.
EREVs have a similar configuration to existing hybrid vehicles, featuring an internal combustion engine, an electric motor, and a battery pack. However, the key difference lies in the role each component plays during the vehicle’s operation.
In traditional hybrids, the electric motor and battery pack play a supportive role, while the internal combustion engine primarily drives the vehicle. EREVs significantly alter this balance. The internal combustion engine’s role is reduced to that of a generator, charging the battery, while the electric motor becomes the primary source of propulsion.
The advantage of EREVs over plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) or pure electric vehicles (BEVs) is their lower production cost, resulting in more affordable pricing. EREV batteries do not require large capacities as they are continuously charged during operation.
According to Ford’s 2024 financial report, the company incurred an EBIT loss of $5.1 billion. Things seem even more challenging this year, with Ford forecasting a potential loss increase to $5-5.5 billion.
