Tesla Cybertruck Secures 5-Star Rating from NHTSA, Settling Long-Standing Safety Debates

According to the latest report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Tesla Cybertruck has achieved a 5-star safety rating in their evaluations. This all-electric pickup truck excelled in most tests, earning a 5-star certification, except for the rollover resistance test and the passenger front barrier crash test, which simulated a head-on collision between two similar vehicles at 35 mph (56 km/h), where it received a 4-star rating.

The tests were conducted in December 2024 on the top-of-the-line 2024 Cyberbeast trim. Notably, this was the first time the Cybertruck underwent safety testing with an independent agency since its launch in November 2023.

Observations from the front barrier crash test revealed that “100% of the windshield was retained and did not intrude into the windshield protected area.” Additionally, both the driver and passenger doors remained closed throughout the impact and were operable post-crash.

In the side-impact test with a rigid pole, the side airbags deployed as expected, while the mobile barrier test also did not reveal any critical issues.

The front airbags functioned accurately, minimizing injury risks for driver and passenger. However, the knee airbag did not deploy during the test, which Tesla stated was by design for this specific test scenario.

The 5-star rating from NHTSA is a testament to the vehicle’s superior passenger protection capabilities, giving it a competitive edge in the increasingly vibrant electric vehicle market. Alongside the Cybertruck, the Ford F-150 Lightning, another heavy-duty electric pickup, also received a 5-star rating from NHTSA. Rivals such as the Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV, GMC Hummer EV, and Rivian R1T are yet to be rated.
