Mercedes-Benz remains committed to offering V12 and V8 engines in its lineup, despite other luxury brands phasing them out.

At its recent annual review, Mercedes-Benz outlined its future plans, with a focus on becoming “leaner, faster, and stronger.” The theme of this new direction is “mastering the transformation.” The strategy revolves around refreshing their core models, including the C-Class, GLC, E-Class, and S-Class. Notably, the flagship S-Class will continue to be offered with a V12 engine.

The German luxury brand is expressing its long-term commitment to the powerful 12-cylinder engine, although market factors will lead to discontinuing this version in certain countries. Currently, the V12 engine is available in the Maybach S-Class S680 and the armored S-Class Guard. Additionally, the Pagani Utopia supercar utilizes a V12 engine produced by AMG.

Mercedes is the only one of the three German luxury automakers to retain the 12-cylinder engine in its portfolio. BMW discontinued the M760i in 2022, and Audi stopped producing the W12 engine after the 2017 A8 generation.

Alongside the V12, Mercedes-Benz will also continue to offer V8 engines. AMG is developing a “next-generation, high-tech electrified V8 engine” for models based on their internal AMG.EA platform. This platform will also support internal combustion engines, rather than being exclusive to electric vehicles. The new/updated engine has been developed to meet Euro 7 regulations, ensuring it won’t be banned in the 27 EU countries.

There is no news about the V6 engine’s fate, but with larger engines being retained, it’s likely that Mercedes-Benz will also hold onto the 6-cylinder option. Regarding hybrid powertrains, the company announced that a “highly electrified 48-volt 4-cylinder engine” will debut next month in the new CLA. This configuration pairs a 1.5-liter gasoline engine with an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Additionally, Mercedes-Benz is developing a smaller 4-cylinder engine with support from its Chinese partners.

Mercedes anticipates that plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles will account for only 30% of its total sales by 2027. The remaining 70% will be internal combustion engines, many with 48V technology. This reality check underscores the company’s overly ambitious previous electrification targets. As recently as 2030, the company intended to go fully electric “when market conditions allow.” That is no longer the case, as the world is not yet ready for a complete shift to electric vehicles.
