Mitsubishi Motors Australia has announced it will discontinue three of its five models, including the ASX, Eclipse Cross, and Pajero Sport. This decision is due to the upcoming Australian Design Rules (ADR) regulations, effective March 1st. As a result, the brand’s lineup in the country will be reduced to just the Outlander and Triton models.
Shaun Westcott, CEO of Mitsubishi Motors Australia, stated that significant investment would be required to redesign the affected models, citing their long life cycles. The Mitsubishi ASX, for instance, has been on the market since 2010 and has undergone three upgrades, making it one of the oldest models in Australia. Similarly, the current-generation Pajero Sport SUV was introduced in 2015 and received upgrades in 2019 and 2024. The Eclipse Cross, though younger, was launched in 2017 and upgraded in 2020.

According to CarsGuide, the three discontinued models accounted for over 30% of Mitsubishi Motors Australia’s sales in 2024. The ASX led the way with 12,330 sales, a 34% increase from 2023. The Eclipse Cross and Pajero Sport also posted impressive growth, with sales of 9,221 and 7,306 units, respectively, reflecting an 18% and 31% surge.
While SUV production for the Australian market has ceased, the company’s CEO assured that they are well-prepared to manage the transition. He confirmed that current inventory levels would be sufficient throughout the year.
