Mazda is in the process of developing the next-generation CX-5, and numerous images of the vehicle have surfaced on social media platforms in recent days. Recently, detailed information about the hybrid powertrain on this model was unexpectedly revealed.

Similar to many other vehicles on the market, the hybrid system on the CX-5 will be a parallel type. This means that the wheels are driven solely by the electric motor, while the gasoline engine is responsible for providing power to the electric motor or charging the battery.

Patent images from the Japanese automaker clearly illustrate the layout of the hybrid engine in the CX-5. The engine assembly comprises a horizontally opposed 4-cylinder engine beneath the hood, with the electric motor positioned to its right, and the control module sitting atop the engine. The transmission is sandwiched between the internal combustion engine and the electric motor.

The gasoline engine on this C-SUV is likely to be a 2.5L or smaller variant, although specific power output figures remain undisclosed. The Mazda CX-5 Hybrid is positioned as a direct competitor to the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid upon its release.

The current generation of the CX-5 is already nine years old and is starting to show its age compared to its rivals in the segment. Aside from hybrid technology, Mazda is also exploring other innovative features to incorporate into their future models. According to reports from late 2024, Mazda intends to introduce vehicles equipped with SkyActiv-Z engines, which offer improved thermal efficiency and combustion compared to the SkyActiv-G engines.
