Chinese automaker BYD has issued a recall for 6,843 units of its Fang Cheng Bao 5 off-road SUVs due to fire risks. The affected vehicles were manufactured between October 16, 2023, and February 1, 2024.

According to CarnewsChina, certain engine control unit screws were not tightened properly during production. Over time, these screws can loosen, causing electrical short circuits and potential fires.

BYD is offering free replacements of the faulty engine control units for affected car owners. The recall campaign, including inspections, assemblies, and repairs, is being carried out through Shenzhen Fang Cheng Bao New Energy Automobile, the distributor of the off-road SUV in the Chinese market.

The Fang Cheng Bao 5 is BYD’s off-road SUV designed to compete directly with the GWM Tank 300. It boasts a rugged, boxy design similar to the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, with dimensions of 4,870 x 1,900 x 1,920 mm and a wheelbase of 2,800 mm.

Under the hood, the SUV features a hybrid powertrain combining a 1.5L Turbo gasoline engine with two electric motors, delivering a combined output of 677 horsepower and 60 Nm of torque. The vehicle also comes equipped with a 31.8 kWh LFP battery, offering a mixed-use range of approximately 1,200 km per charge under the CLTC standard.

The Bao 5 is expected to be launched in international markets under the name Denza B5 later this year. It was recently spotted undergoing test drives in Australia in December.

In China, the Fang Cheng Bao 5 is priced between 239,000 and 302,800 CNY (approximately 32,750 to 41,350 USD). This extremely low price has sparked controversy and mixed reactions in its home market.

Previously, the Bao 5 was priced between 289,800 and 342,800 CNY. BYD decided to lower the price to compete with the Tank 300, even before delivering the first batch of Bao 5 vehicles. Customers who had already placed orders faced an immediate loss of nearly 20% of the vehicle’s value, leading to protests and demonstrations at dealerships.
