As the Lunar New Year approaches, there is an increase in traffic to the central shopping district. Many drivers, preoccupied with their festive shopping, tend to neglect proper parking practices, resulting in congestion on the roads.

Since the beginning of this year, administrative fines for parking in unauthorized areas or encroaching on sidewalks have been adjusted. There are now clear regulations regarding the distance between the vehicle’s wheels and the curb when parking, with specified limits. If these limits are exceeded, drivers will be subject to monetary penalties.

Specifically, according to Decree 168, parking on sidewalks or roads without maintaining a distance of at least 25 cm from the wheels to the curb is punishable by a fine ranging from VND 800,000 to VND 1 million.

In cases where parking in unauthorized areas causes congestion, affecting other vehicles, the fine increases to VND 4-6 million, along with a deduction of 2 points from the driver’s license. If a traffic accident occurs as a result, the administrative fine rises to VND 20-22 million, and the violator will also have 10 points deducted from their driver’s license.

This regulation has been implemented in many countries for a long time to alleviate traffic congestion in central areas. For instance, in the United States, the fine for parking in unauthorized areas ranges from $25 to $100, depending on the state. During peak periods, if a vehicle is parked illegally and causes congestion, the administrative fine will be higher, and the violator may even face criminal charges.

In China, drivers are also not allowed to park on the road more than 30 cm away from the curb. Violators may be fined 50-200 CNY, equivalent to 7-28 USD. In addition to the administrative fine, points are deducted from the driver’s license.

The issue of vehicles stopping and parking in unauthorized areas has been a persistent problem for many years in major cities across Vietnam, especially on sidewalks, where cars often jostle for space, encroaching on pedestrian areas. By specifying the distance violation and the corresponding fine, these new regulations are expected to enhance deterrence and raise awareness among vehicle operators.
