A recent video circulating on social media sparked emotion as it depicted a relatively new Ford F-150 Raptor being crushed by a hydraulic press.
In fact, this particular Ford F-150 Raptor was a pre-production model used by Ford during their prototype testing phase. Consequently, it lacked the standard VIN number required for retail sale. Upon completion of all tests, evaluations, and trials, the vehicle was destined for destruction.
While the crushing of this vehicle may evoke a sense of loss, it is a standard practice within the automotive industry. Car manufacturers typically produce tens to hundreds of prototypes for rigorous testing before officially launching a new model to the public.
There are exceptions, however, where prototype test models of certain supercars are retained by the manufacturers for display or commercial purposes. For instance, several prototypes of the LaFerrari were auctioned off publicly. McLaren also converted 10 test vehicles into road-legal cars for sale.
