A train engineer with 20 years of experience was forced to use emergency brakes when he spotted two women taking photos on the train tracks in Vĩnh Phúc province.

On March 12, in the section between Hướng Lại and Vĩnh Yên stations in Vĩnh Phúc, the train engineer, Lê Ngọc Anh, had to make an emergency stop when he saw two women casually walking on the tracks, taking photos, despite his repeated horn signals and attempts to slow down.

This situation was extremely dangerous as the heavy freight train was challenging to stop abruptly.

The train, with 25 carriages, was traveling from Tiên Kiên station in Phú Thọ province to Yên Viên station in Hanoi. Lê Ngọc Anh, 43, is an experienced engineer from the Hanoi Locomotive Enterprise.

Ngọc Anh shared that in his nearly 20 years of experience, he has encountered many dangerous situations due to people’s lack of awareness of railway safety. However, this was the first time he witnessed someone disregarding the approaching train for a photoshoot.

At the time of the incident, the train was traveling at 40 km/h, and from a distance of over 200 meters, Ngọc Anh spotted the two women on the tracks and immediately sounded the horn and began to slow down.

Faced with this emergency, Ngọc Anh had no choice but to use the extraordinary brake (a complete stop). As the train gradually slowed down, the two women finally moved away from the tracks when the train was just 10 meters away from them.

Train engineer Lê Ngọc Anh had to use emergency brakes to stop the train.

Ngọc Anh explained that railway traffic is complex and unpredictable, and situations like these often require emergency braking. In his years of experience, he has had to use this drastic measure a few times, the last being 5-6 years ago.

“Such situations are beyond our control, and we’re fortunate that no unfortunate incidents occurred. After this event, I reported to the dispatchers, and the train continued its journey to Yên Viên station safely,” said Ngọc Anh.

It is worth noting that Lê Ngọc Anh is the leader of the 947 machine group, in the 10th train team, of the 1st Locomotive Operation Workshop, under the Hanoi Locomotive Enterprise branch.

With his extensive experience, Ngọc Anh has achieved impressive safety records, including the 2nd-degree Labor Medal in 2024, with 350,000 km of safe driving. Both his parents were also employees of the Hanoi Locomotive Enterprise and are now retired.
